Mendenhall Springs is a special place in Alameda County, California. It started as natural springs and later became a popular resort. It's not a city or town with its own government. Instead, it's an unincorporated community, which means it's part of the larger county area.

This spot is about 9 miles (14 km) southeast of a city called Livermore. It sits high up, at an elevation of 1,818 feet (554 meters) above sea level. Imagine being almost as high as some small mountains!

History of Mendenhall Springs

In the 1870s, a person named William M. Mendenhall had a great idea. He decided to turn the natural springs here into a health spa. People believed that the water from these springs had special healing powers.

From Gold Mines to Health Spa

The water for the spa came from an interesting source. It was diverted through tunnels that were first dug for gold prospecting. So, what started as a search for gold ended up helping people relax and feel better! By the year 1909, the Mendenhall Springs resort was quite big. It could host up to 75 guests at a time. People would come to enjoy the peaceful surroundings and the spring waters.
