Menongue is a town and a municipality in Angola. It is the capital of the Cuando Cubango Province. The town was once known as Serpa Pinto. In 2014, about 320,914 people lived in the municipality of Menongue. It is one of the few places in Angola where most people are from the Mbunda ethnic group.
Menongue is an important transport hub. It is the end point, or terminus, of the Moçâmedes Railway. This railway line connects Menongue to the city of Moçâmedes. The town also has a small airport called Menongue Airport.
History of Menongue
During the time when Angola was a colony, the town was named Serpa Pinto. This name honored a famous Portuguese explorer who traveled a lot.
Sports in Menongue
Menongue is home to a soccer team called FC Cuando Cubango. In 2018, this team was promoted to the Girabola. This is the top soccer league in Angola.
