Paulo Menotti Del Picchia (born March 20, 1892 – died August 23, 1988) was an important Brazilian poet, journalist, and painter. He was part of a special group called the Generation of 1922. This group started a new art and writing style in Brazil known as Modernism.

Early Life and Career

Menotti Del Picchia first studied law and worked as a lawyer in a town called Itapira. While he was a lawyer, he also started writing poetry. Later, he moved to São Paulo, the city where he was born. There, he met other young artists and writers who were interested in new ideas.

The Modernism Movement

Menotti Del Picchia became good friends with Mário de Andrade and other artists. He was a member of a famous group called the Group of Five. This group included Mário de Andrade, another poet named Oswald de Andrade, and two painters, Tarsila do Amaral and Anita Malfatti.

In February 1922, Menotti Del Picchia was a key part of the Week of Modern Art in São Paulo. This event was very important for the history of modern art in Brazil. It helped to introduce the new Modernism style to many people.

Later Life and Honors

Menotti Del Picchia lived longer than many of his friends from the Modernism movement. Because of this, he received many honors and awards for his part in creating Modernismo. He was given many top awards from the government, universities, and private groups in Brazil. Today, his old house in Itapira is a museum.

From 1943 until he passed away in 1988, he held the 28th seat in the Brazilian Academy of Letters. This is a very respected group that promotes Brazilian literature.
