A Look Back at Mentor's History
How Mentor Got Its Name
Mentor was founded a long time ago, in 1881. A man named Francis M. Sanders started the community. He was a big fan of the President at that time, James A. Garfield. President Garfield lived in a town called Mentor, Ohio. So, Francis Sanders decided to name this new community in Indiana "Mentor" to honor the President's hometown.
Another Name for Mentor
For a while, Mentor had another name too! It was sometimes called Altoga. There was even a post office in the community that used the name Altoga. This post office operated from 1883 until 1908. After that, the name "Mentor" became the main name for the community.
