Mercedes Abad (born in 1961 in Barcelona, Spain) is a Spanish writer and journalist. She is well-known for her short stories, novels, and plays.

Early Life and Writing Career

Mercedes Abad studied Journalism at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Before that, she completed her high school studies at the Liceu Francès.

She has written many books, including collections of short stories like Soplando al viento (1995) and Amigos y fantasmas (2004). Her book Amigos y fantasmas even won a special award called the Mario Vargas Llosa NH Short Story Award in 2004!

Mercedes Abad has also written a novel called Sangre (2000) and a funny essay titled Sólo dime dónde lo hacemos (1991). Besides books, she has created several plays and adapted stories for theater groups, like La Fura dels Baus. She also works as a translator, helping to turn books and texts from one language into another. Today, she writes for different news and media companies.

One of her short stories, Pasión defenestrante (which means "Uncontrolled Passion"), was chosen to be in a collection called Rainy Days - Días de lluvia. This book features short stories by modern Spanish women writers and includes English translations.
