Early Life and Education
Mercedes Abad grew up in Barcelona. She attended a school called the Liceu Francès. Later, she went to college at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, where she studied Journalism and earned her degree.
Writing Career
Before becoming a famous writer, Abad explored the worlds of movies and theatre. Her writing career took off in 1986 when she won a major literary award for her first book, a collection of short stories.
Books and Stories
Over the years, Abad has published many popular books. In 1989, she released a collection of short stories called Felicidades conyugales. This was followed by another collection, Soplando al viento, in 1995.
In 2000, she wrote her first novel, Sangre. Her 2004 book of short stories, Amigos y fantasmas, was a big success. It won the Mario Vargas Llosa NH Short Story Award for the best book of short stories published that year.
One of her short stories, Pasión defenestrante (Uncontrolled Passion), was included in an anthology, or a special collection of stories. The book, called Rainy Days - Días de lluvia: Short Stories by Contemporary Spanish Women Writers, featured her story in both Spanish and English.
Other Work
Besides writing books, Abad has also written several plays. One of her most famous works was an adaptation called ..., which she created for the well-known theatre group La Fura dels Baus. She also works as a translator, helping to bring stories from other languages into Spanish. Abad continues to write for different media outlets as a journalist.
