Mercedes Cabrera Calvo-Sotelo, born on December 3, 1951, is a Spanish politician, historian, and former government minister. She has also received a special honor called the Grand-Cross of the Order of Prince Henry. She is related to important figures in Spanish history, including her uncle, Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo, who was a former prime minister. Her grand-uncle was also a famous physicist named Blas Cabrera Felipe.

About Mercedes Cabrera
Her Education and Early Career
Mercedes Cabrera earned a special degree called a PhD in political science and sociology from the Complutense University of Madrid. Since 1996, she has been a professor at the same university. She taught about the history of political ideas and how social and political groups work.
Her Family and Political Life
Mercedes Cabrera is married to Carlos Arenillas, who was a vice-president of Spain's National Stock Exchange Commission (CNMV). They have two children.
She became a member of the Spanish Parliament, representing Madrid, in 2004. She was chosen to lead the parliamentary committee that focused on education and science. She is also involved with the Pablo Iglesias Foundation and leads the Association of Friends of the "Residencia de Estudiantes," which are important cultural and educational organizations. She also taught at the "Estudio" School in Madrid.
On April 7, 2006, Mercedes Cabrera was appointed as the Spanish Minister of Education and Science by Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. She held this important position until April 2009, when Ángel Gabilondo took over.
Honors and Awards
Mercedes Cabrera received a special honor from Portugal. On September 25, 2006, she was given the Grand-Cross of the Order of Prince Henry. This is a high award given to people who have done great things for Portugal or for humanity.
