Mercedes Fernández-Martorell is a Spanish writer and expert in anthropology. She was born in Barcelona, Spain, on November 25, 1948.
Mercedes Fernández-Martorell studied modern history and later earned a special degree called a Ph.D. in social anthropology from the University of Barcelona. Since 1980, she has been a professor of anthropology at the University of Barcelona. She teaches classes about how people live in cities, which is called urban anthropology. She also teaches about anthropology and feminism, which explores how gender roles affect society. She has written many books and articles on these subjects.
She has given lectures and courses in many places. In Spain, she has taught at universities in cities like Seville, the Basque Country, Granada, Málaga, Huelva, and the University of the Balearic Islands. Outside of Spain, she has taught in Paris, France, Mexico City, Mexico, and Genoa, Italy. Mercedes Fernández-Martorell also leads a group at the University of Barcelona called the Observatory for Construction and Meaning of Human Recreation (OCRSH).
