Discovering Mercer's History

Mercer has a cool history, even though it's a small spot on the map!

How Mercer Began

Mercer was first planned out in the year 1833. Imagine people deciding where streets and buildings would go! A few years later, in 1837, a post office opened in Mercer. A post office is where people send and receive letters and packages. This post office served the community for a long time, until 1957.

The Story Behind Mercer's Name

Did you know Mercer wasn't always called Mercer? Its first name was Milan. But in 1837, the Ohio General Assembly decided to change it. The General Assembly is like the state's main law-making group. They changed the name to "Mercer" to honor a very important person named Hugh Mercer.

Hugh Mercer was a hero from the American Revolution, a big war where the American colonies fought for their freedom from Great Britain. He was a brave soldier who died about 60 years before the town of Mercer was named. So, the community got its name to remember his courage and sacrifice.
