Meri Huws was born in September 1957 in Carmarthenshire, Wales. She is known for her work as a public official and for her efforts to support the Welsh language. She was the first Welsh Language Commissioner, a very important job in Wales.
Meri Huws went to Ysgol Bro Gwaun for school. She then studied law and politics at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. Later, she went to the University of Oxford to train as a social worker. She also worked at Bangor University, where she was in charge of the Lifelong Learning Department and was a deputy vice-chancellor.

Early Work and Language Roles
Meri Huws has always been involved in promoting the Welsh language. From 1981 to 1983, she was the leader of The Welsh Language Society. This group works to protect and promote the Welsh language.
Supporting the Welsh Language
She was also a member of the Welsh Language Board from 1993 to 1997. This Board helped to make sure the Welsh language was used more widely. Later, from 2004 to 2012, she became the Chairman of the Welsh Language Board.
Welsh Language Commissioner
In 2012, Meri Huws was chosen to be the first ever Welsh Language Commissioner. This role is very important for the Welsh language. The Commissioner works to protect the rights of people who speak Welsh. They also make sure that public services in Wales are available in Welsh. Her time as Commissioner ended in March 2019.
National Library of Wales
In April 2020, Meri Huws took on another important role. She became the temporary President of the National Library of Wales. This was a special moment because she was the first woman to ever hold this position in the Library's history. The National Library of Wales is a huge library that collects and preserves books, maps, and other important items from Wales. She stepped down from this role in August 2021.
