Meri Huws was born in September 1957 in Carmarthenshire, Wales. She is a well-known Welsh expert and public servant. She used to be the Welsh Language Commissioner, a special role that helps protect and promote the Welsh language.

Meri Huws went to Ysgol Bro Gwaun for school. She then studied law and politics at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. Later, she went to the University of Oxford to train as a social worker. She also worked at Bangor University as the head of the Lifelong Learning Department and as a deputy vice-chancellor.

Early Career and Language Work

Supporting the Welsh Language

Meri Huws has always been a strong supporter of the Welsh language. From 1981 to 1983, she was the leader of The Welsh Language Society. This group works to make sure the Welsh language is used and respected.

She was also a member of the Welsh Language Board between 1993 and 1997. This board helped to make decisions about the Welsh language. Meri Huws is also a member of the Labour Party.

Leading the Welsh Language Board

Meri Huws became the Chairman of the Welsh Language Board in 2004. She held this important position until March 2012, when the Board was closed down.

Her appointment to this role caused some discussion. Some people wondered if there was a conflict of interest because she had a past connection to Andrew Davies. At that time, Andrew Davies was a government minister in Wales. However, Meri Huws continued her work to support the Welsh language.

First Welsh Language Commissioner

In 2012, Meri Huws was chosen to be the very first Welsh Language Commissioner. This was a new and important job. As Commissioner, she worked to make sure the Welsh language was treated fairly and used more often. Her time as Commissioner ended in March 2019.

National Library of Wales

Becoming President

In April 2020, Meri Huws took on another big role. She was appointed as the temporary President of the National Library of Wales. This was a historic moment because she was the first woman ever to hold this top position at the Library.

The National Library of Wales is a very important place. It collects and keeps many books, maps, and other items that tell the story of Wales. Meri Huws helped to lead the Library during a challenging time. She stepped down from this position in August 2021.
