History of Meridian Hills
How Meridian Hills Began
Building homes in Meridian Hills started in the early 1920s. A golf club, the Meridian Hills Country Club, opened in 1923. However, the area did not officially become a town until 1937. When a place "incorporates," it means it forms its own official local government.
Becoming Part of Indianapolis
Since 1970, Meridian Hills has been an "included town." This happened when it became part of Indianapolis through a plan called Unigov. Unigov was a way to combine the city government of Indianapolis with the government of Marion County.
Even though it is now part of Indianapolis, Meridian Hills still has its own town government. This means it can make its own local laws, collect some taxes, and even have its own police officers. It is a unique setup where it is part of a bigger city but keeps some local control.
