Merkel-cell carcinoma facts for kids
Merkel-cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and serious type of skin cancer. It's not very common, affecting about 3 out of every million people.
This cancer often appears on the head, neck, or eyelids. It is more common in older people.
What Causes Merkel Cell Carcinoma?
Merkel-cell carcinoma can be caused by a virus called Merkel cell polyomavirus. This virus is very common, but it only causes MCC in a few people.
Other Risk Factors
People with a weak immune system are more likely to get MCC. This can happen if someone has certain illnesses or takes medicines that lower their immune system.
Spending a lot of time in the sun and getting too much ultraviolet radiation can also increase the risk of developing this cancer. It's always important to protect your skin from the sun.
