Merrell Jackson (born April 26, 1952 – died February 23, 1991) was an American actor and singer. He is best known for his role in the 1973 movie Godspell, where he played one of the apostles. In the film, he sang the song "All Good Gifts."

Merrell Jackson's Life and Career

Early Life and Talents

Merrell Jackson grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Calumet High School in 1971. During his time there, Merrell showed great talent in music and acting.

He was a lead singer in the school's a cappella chorus. He also starred in two school plays. For these roles, he even won a "best actor" award. In his final year, he played King Melchior in a Christmas opera called Amahl and the Night Visitors. This school play was shown on local TV.

Merrell also sang in the All-City High School Chorus. He was an understudy for the musical The Me Nobody Knows in Chicago. An understudy learns a role and is ready to perform if the main actor cannot.

Moving Towards the Stage

In the summer of 1971, Merrell received a special scholarship. This allowed him to attend the National Youth Chorus Workshop. It was held at Wolf Trap in Washington, D.C..

He was one of 25 students chosen to perform on a TV special. The show was called The New Performers: Chicagoland '71. His fellow performers voted him "Best Trouper." This award recognized him as the most helpful and supportive cast member.

Later in 1971, Merrell joined the Goodman Theatre's touring group. He performed in a children's musical comedy called The Magic Isle.

Starring in Godspell

In May 1972, Merrell auditioned for the Chicago stage version of Godspell. However, he was chosen for the Godspell movie instead! He filmed his scenes in New York from August to November 1972.

After filming, he joined the Chicago stage production of Godspell in November. He was called back to New York for more filming. Then, he continued performing in the stage show until it ended in August 1973. In the movie, Merrell played one of the apostles. He famously sang the song "All Good Gifts."

Later Career

After Godspell, Merrell Jackson joined the Chicago cast of another musical. This show was called Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope. He later toured with the national company of this show.

While living in New York City, Merrell continued his performing career. He danced with different dance companies. He also appeared in musicals on Broadway. Broadway is a famous theater district in New York City. Merrell also appeared in TV commercials, including one for 7 Up soft drink. Besides performing, he was also a painter.

Merrell Jackson had a child named David Clayton Jackson.
