Merriam Modell (born Miriam Levant) was an American writer. She was born in New York City on May 19, 1908. She mostly wrote short stories and exciting suspense novels. She often used the pen name Evelyn Piper. Many of her stories were about the everyday challenges families faced in America.

Merriam Modell went to Cornell University. After college, she traveled a lot. She lived in Germany for several years, from the late 1920s until 1933. Then, she came back to the United States.
Her Writing Journey
Merriam married Dr. Walter Modell, who was a heart specialist. They had one son named John. After becoming a mother, Merriam started writing and publishing her short stories. Many of her stories appeared in a famous magazine called The New Yorker.
