Merrimac is a special kind of community in Montgomery County, Virginia. It's called a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area that the government counts for population, but it's not officially a city or town.

In 2010, about 2,133 people lived in Merrimac. It's part of a bigger area that includes the towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg.

A Look Back in Time

Merrimac got its name because of a famous ship! Coal from mines near Merrimac was used on the CSS Virginia. This ship was important during the American Civil War.

There was also a post office in Merrimac called 'Merrimac Mines'. It was open from 1904 until 1935. Two historic places in Merrimac, the Linkous-Kipps House and the Montgomery Primitive Baptist Church, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are important historical sites.
