A Peyote cactus

Mescaline is a natural chemical found in some plants. It is mostly found in certain types of cactuses. These include the Peyote cactus, the Peruvian Torch cactus, and the San Pedro cactus. You can also find tiny amounts of mescaline in some plants from the pea family, like the Acacia berlandieri.

For a very long time, some Native American groups have used plants containing mescaline in their religious ceremonies. They believe these plants help them connect with their spiritual beliefs.

What is Mescaline?

Mescaline is a special kind of chemical substance called an alkaloid. Alkaloids are natural compounds often found in plants. They can have strong effects on the body and mind. Other well-known alkaloids include caffeine (found in coffee) and nicotine (found in tobacco).

Where Does Mescaline Come From?

Mescaline is made naturally by certain plants. It is most famous for being in several types of cacti.

Cactus Plants

  • Peyote Cactus: This small, spineless cactus grows mainly in the deserts of Mexico and the southwestern United States. It has been used for thousands of years by Native American tribes in their traditions.
  • Peruvian Torch Cactus: This tall, column-shaped cactus grows in the Andes Mountains of Peru. It has been used by people in South America for its special properties for a very long time.
  • San Pedro Cactus: Similar to the Peruvian Torch, the San Pedro cactus also grows in the Andes. It is another plant with a long history of traditional use in South America.

Other Plants

Besides cacti, very small amounts of mescaline can be found in some plants from the pea family. One example is the Acacia berlandieri tree, which grows in Texas and Mexico.

Traditional Uses

For many centuries, mescaline-containing plants have played an important role in the cultures of some indigenous peoples.

Native American Ceremonies

In North America, the Peyote cactus is central to the spiritual practices of the Native American Church. Members use Peyote in sacred ceremonies to pray, meditate, and seek spiritual guidance. These ceremonies are a way to honor their ancestors and traditions. The use of Peyote in these ceremonies is protected by law for members of the Native American Church in the United States.

South American Traditions

In South America, the San Pedro and Peruvian Torch cacti have been used by shamans and healers for thousands of years. They are part of ancient rituals for healing, divination (foretelling the future), and spiritual journeys. These plants are seen as sacred tools that help people connect with nature and the spirit world.
