Lord facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A Lord is a person who has power and control. Women usually take the title 'Lady' instead of Lord. However, there is one special example of a female Lord: the Lord of Mann, who is the ruler of the Isle of Man. The land belonging to a lord is often called a lordship. When we talk about Lords as a group, they are part of a peerage, which means a group of people with special titles.

The word "Lord" actually comes from very old English words. It combines "loaf" (which means bread) and "ward" (which meant "protector" back then). So, a "Lord" or "loaf ward" was originally "the one who protected the bread."

Lords in History: Feudal Times

In the old feudal system, which was a way society was organized long ago, there were different kinds of lords. A mesne lord was a lord who had people called vassals working for him and living on his land. But this mesne lord was also a vassal to someone even more powerful. The person who ruled over many mesne lords was sometimes called an overlord. This higher lord was sometimes the king himself.

"The Lord" in Religion

In a religious way, the term The Lord often means God. This meaning is mostly used by the Abrahamic religions, which include Judaism, Islam, and Christianity.
