Messeturm Frankfurt
The Tower seen from street level

The MesseTurm (which means Trade Fair Tower in English) is a very tall building, also known as a skyscraper, located in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. When it was built, it was the tallest building in Europe! Today, it is still one of the tallest buildings in Germany and the fourth tallest in Europe. It stands at an impressive height of 257 metres (about 840 feet).

The MesseTurm is found in a part of Frankfurt called Westend, which is close to the city's main trade fair area. It is home to the German offices of some big companies like Reuters, Goldman Sachs, and Credit Suisse.

Building the MesseTurm

The construction of the MesseTurm began in 1988 and was completed in 1991. From 1991 to 1997, it held the record for the tallest building in Europe. In 1997, another building in Frankfurt, the Commerzbank Tower, became slightly taller, by just two metres.

A World Record Foundation

Building the foundation for the MesseTurm was a huge task! It even set a world record for the longest continuous concrete pour. Imagine this: ninety large trucks worked non-stop for 78 hours, pouring concrete into the foundation, which was 6 metres (about 20 feet) deep. This was a massive effort to make sure the skyscraper had a super strong base.

The Pencil Skyscraper

One of the most unique things about the MesseTurm is the pyramid shape at its very top. This pyramid is 36.3 metres (about 119 feet) tall! This special design makes it stand out from other skyscrapers. Because of its pointy top, people in Germany often call it "The Pencil."
