Metallura phoebe |
The black metaltail (Metallura phoebe) is a special type of hummingbird. These amazing birds are known for their super-fast wings. You can find the black metaltail living in the high mountains of Bolivia and Peru. It prefers places that are moist and high up, like cloud forests and areas with lots of shrubs.
About the Black Metaltail
The black metaltail is a small bird, just like most hummingbirds. It gets its name from its tail, which often looks dark but can have a metallic shine in the right light. This metallic look is common in many hummingbirds. They are part of a group of birds called Metallura.
Where They Live
This hummingbird lives in the Andes mountains. It prefers areas that are quite high up, usually between 2,700 and 4,600 meters (about 8,800 to 15,000 feet) above sea level. These places are often called "montane" areas. They are usually moist and can be covered in thick forests or dense shrubland. The climate there is often cool and misty.
What They Eat
Like other hummingbirds, the black metaltail mainly eats nectar. Nectar is a sweet liquid found in flowers. They use their long, thin beaks and tongues to reach deep into flowers. They also eat tiny insects and spiders. These small creatures give them the protein they need.
Conservation Status
The black metaltail is currently listed as a species of "Least Concern" by BirdLife International. This means that its population is stable. It is not considered to be in danger of disappearing right now. This is good news for this beautiful hummingbird.
