Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Metap, also known as mit'ap, Meetup, Mit'apdzi, or big mit'ap, is the name of an old village. It belonged to the Kwakwakaʼwakw people, who are a First Nations group from the Pacific Northwest Coast. This village was located at the top of Viner Sound on the northwest side of Gilford Island. This area is part of the Queen Charlotte Strait region, which is on the Central Coast of British Columbia, Canada. Today, an Indian reserve called Meetup Indian Reserve No. 2 is located in the same spot.

What Was Metap?

Metap was an important village and fishing area. It was used by two groups of the Kwakwakaʼwakw people: the Kwicksutaineuk and the Mamalilikala. These groups relied on the area for their daily lives and for gathering food, especially fish.

How Metap Became a Reserve

In 1879, a person named Commissioner Sproat was working to set aside lands for different Indigenous groups. He decided that Metap would be a fishing site for the Mamalilikulla people. Later on, this site officially became Meetup Indian Reserve No. 2. It's important to know that the Kwicksataineuk people originally owned and used this land before it was designated as a reserve.
