The Methodist Episcopal Church of Winooski, often called the Winooski United Methodist Church, is a special old church building in Winooski, Vermont. You can find it at 24 West Allen Street. This church was built in 1918 and is a great example of a unique building style called Carpenter Gothic. Because of its history and cool design, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 2, 2001. This means it's an important place worth protecting!
Discovering the Church's Unique Look
The Winooski United Methodist Church is right in the middle of downtown Winooski. It stands at the corner of West Allen and Follett Streets. This church is a large, one-story building made of wood. It has a pointed roof, which is called a gabled roof.
The outside of the church is covered with two types of wood siding. Some parts have flat, overlapping boards called clapboards. Other parts have decorative wooden shingles. These shingles are cut into cool patterns, making the church look even more interesting.
A square tower rises up from the left side of the roof. This tower has three-part openings with louvers, which are like angled slats. This part is called the belfry, where church bells might be. The very top of the tower has a short, sloped roof.
The front of the church looks almost the same on both sides. It has two arched porches that are set back into the building. These arches are shaped like a pointed arch, often called a lancet arch. There's also a big, pointed stained-glass window in the middle of the front.
The main door is on the left porch. It's a double door with another lancet-shaped stained-glass window above it. The porch on the right has a smaller, second entrance.
A Look Back at the Church's History
The Methodist church group in Winooski officially started in 1847. Before that, they were connected to the church in Burlington, Vermont. Methodist preachers first came to this area in the 1830s.
By 1860, the church members had saved enough money to build their first church. This first building was built right on the same spot where the current church stands today. Sadly, that original church building burned down in 1917. But the community didn't give up! The very next year, in 1918, they built the church you see now. It has been an important part of the Winooski community ever since.
