The Metrotranvía Mendoza is a special public transport system in Mendoza, Argentina. It's like a modern tram or light train. It uses special cars that run on tracks. These tracks were built on old railway paths.

This system helps people travel around the wider area of Mendoza. This includes places like Las Heras, Godoy Cruz, and Maipú. The main line is about 12.5 kilometers (7.8 miles) long. It connects Mendoza city to General Gutierrez in Maipú. The trains run on two tracks, side by side. They operate from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM. People often call this line the Línea Verde, which means Green Line.

How the Metrotranvía Started

In 2009, the government of Mendoza Province decided to build this tram line. They signed an agreement to make it happen. The project was estimated to cost about 62.4 million Argentine Pesos. Two private companies, CEOSA and SOGESIC S.A., did the construction work.

There was a special opening event in February 2012. But the system wasn't fully ready yet. So, regular service didn't start right away. From April 29, 2012, people could take short test rides on parts of the line. The Metrotranvía finally began its regular service on October 8, 2012.

Future Plans for the Green Line

The Metrotranvía system is still growing! As of early 2015, workers were busy extending the line. They were adding another 5.5 kilometers (3.4 miles) of double track. This extension goes to Panquehua, in Las Heras. The new tracks were made in Spain, and the concrete parts that hold the tracks were made in Argentina.

This expansion also includes building new crossings where the tram tracks meet roads. Old train stations along the route are also being fixed up. This new section was expected to open in February 2019. There are also plans to extend the line even further. One idea is to reach El Plumerillo International Airport. Another plan is to add a new branch line from Godoy Cruz to Luján de Cuyo.

The Trains: What They Use

The Metrotranvía uses special train cars called Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs). There are eleven of these cars. They were bought used from the San Diego Trolley system in San Diego, California, USA. By November 2011, about half of these cars had arrived in Mendoza. The last two cars arrived on April 27, 2012.

In 2022, the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System sent even more trains. They sent 39 Siemens SD-100 LRVs to help expand the service.
