Luján de Cuyo is very famous for its wine. It was the first area in Argentina to be officially recognized for making wine. This happened in 1993 by a group called the International Organisation of Vine and Wine.
The vineyards in Luján de Cuyo are in the upper Mendoza valley. They are about 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) above sea level. This high altitude is great for growing grapes. The Mendoza River flows through this valley.
Many types of grapes grow well here. The most successful grape is Malbec. But Luján de Cuyo also produces good Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Torrontes wines. The soil in these vineyards is often sandy or stony. It sits on top of clay. This type of soil helps the grapes grow strong and healthy.
