Metz is a small, unincorporated community located in Steuben County, Indiana. It is part of York Township in the United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a shared identity but without its own local government.

Metz: A Look at Its Past

Metz has a long history, starting in the early 1800s.

Early Settlers in Metz

The first person to settle in the area that would become Metz was Fayette Barron. He arrived in 1836. He chose the crossroads where the community would later grow.

Metz's Busy Years

Metz was most active and important in the late 1800s and early 1900s. By 1885, it was a busy village. It had many shops, including two that sold general goods. There was also a saw mill and a flour mill. People could stay at a hotel, and various skilled workers lived there. The village even had four doctors.

The Metz School Story

In 1919, the schools from York and Richland townships joined together. They formed the new Metz school. This school taught students from kindergarten all the way through high school. The school operated for 40 years. It closed in 1959 because fewer students were attending. The school's sports teams were known as the Mohawks.

Post Office and Modern Metz

Metz had its own post office starting in 1849. It served the community for over 100 years. The post office closed in 1959, the same year the school did. Today, Metz is a quiet place. It has about a dozen homes, a church, and some apartments. You can also find a pop machine near the fire station.
