A Look Back: The Metz Fire of 1908

Metz Township has an important and sad part of its history. On October 15, 1908, a huge forest fire swept through the area. This fire burned about 2.5 million acres (10,000 square kilometers) of land in Presque Isle County. Most of the Metz area was destroyed.

Tragically, 42 people lost their lives in this fire. Many of them were on a train that was derailed because the fire twisted the train tracks. This terrible event became known as the "Metz Fire."

Most of the victims were of Polish or German background.
