Mew (ミュウ, Myuu) is a special fictional character from the Pokémon world. In the Pokémon video games, Mew is a Psychic-type Pokémon. It was a secret Pokémon found in the very first Pokémon games: Pokémon Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow. Mew is like Celebi from the Gold/Silver/Crystal games and Jirachi from the Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald games.

The name "Mew" sounds like the noise a cat makes. A lead programmer, Shigeki Morimoto, secretly put Mew into the game. When the Game Freak president, Satoshi Tajiri, found out, he decided to tell everyone about it.

Mew is #151 in the Pokédex. You could only get Mew through special events or by using a cheating device like Gameshark.

Mewcertificate
Players who won Mew through Nintendo contests and events received a certificate with the identification number for their game.

Finding Mewtwo in the Games

In the games Pokémon Red and Blue, players first learn about Mewtwo from research papers. These papers are found in a ruined laboratory on Cinnabar Island. The story says Mewtwo is a mutant clone of Mew, made after many years of work by one scientist. You can find Mewtwo in the Cerulean Cave. This cave opens after you defeat the Elite Four.

In the remakes, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, players need to get 60 Pokédex entries before they can enter the cave.

Mewtwo's Mega Evolution

In Pokémon X and Y, you can find Mewtwo in the Unknown Dungeon after entering the Hall of Fame. Mewtwo can also Mega Evolve into two different forms:

  • Mega Mewtwo X: This form uses an item called Mewtwonite X.
  • Mega Mewtwo Y: This form uses an item called Mewtwonite Y.

Mewtwo in Super Smash Bros.

Mewtwo is also a character in the fighting game Super Smash Bros. Melee. It is one of eleven characters you can unlock and play as in the game. Mewtwo uses special moves like Shadow Ball, Confusion, Teleport, and Disable.
