List of generation I Pokémon facts for kids
Welcome to the world of Pokémon! The first group of Pokémon, called Generation I, introduced the very first 151 amazing creatures. These Pokémon first appeared in 1996 in the Game Boy video games Pocket Monsters Red and Green in Japan. Outside of Japan, these games were known as Pokémon Red and Blue.
This list shows all 151 Pokémon from Generation I. They are listed in order of their National Pokédex number. The first Pokémon is Bulbasaur, number 0001. The last one is Mew, number 0151. Sometimes, Pokémon have different forms that change their type, and these are included. Special forms like Mega Evolutions and regional forms are found on pages for the generations they were introduced in. You'll also find MissingNo. here, which is a special kind of game error.
How Pokémon Were Designed
Game Freak created the Pokémon games, and Nintendo published them. The series started in Japan in 1996 with Pokémon Red and Blue for the Game Boy. In these games, you play as a Pokémon Trainer. Your main goal is to catch and train creatures called Pokémon.
Players use their Pokémon's special powers to battle other Pokémon. Some Pokémon can even change into stronger forms through a process called evolution. A big goal in each game is to fill your Pokédex. This is like a big encyclopedia of all the Pokémon. You fill it by catching, evolving, and trading Pokémon.
The first designs for each Pokémon were pixel art sprites. These were made by the development team. They chose simple colors to work with the Game Boy's limits. The main designer, Ken Sugimori, drew all the final designs. He made sure they looked good together.
Many Pokémon in Generation I had simple designs. They looked like real-life animals. For example, Pidgey looks like a pigeon, Krabby like a crab, Rattata like a rat, and Ekans like a snake. Some Pokémon, like Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and Charmander, were designed by starting with their final evolved forms and working backward.
When the games came to English-speaking countries, Nintendo of America gave the Pokémon "clever and descriptive names." These names often related to their looks or powers. This helped American kids connect with them. For example, Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee are named after martial arts actors Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee.
