The second group of Pokémon creatures, known as Generation II, includes 100 new species. These Pokémon first appeared in the 1999 Game Boy Color games, Pokémon Gold and Silver. These games are set in the Johto region. Some of these Pokémon were actually seen in the Pokémon TV show before the games came out. For example, Ho-Oh appeared in the very first episode in 1998. Togepi was a regular character owned by Misty. Donphan was in the first Pokémon movie in 1998. Snubbull and Marill appeared in the first Pikachu short movie. Later, Elekid, Bellossom, Ledyba, and Hoothoot showed up in another Pikachu adventure. Finally, Lugia and Slowking were introduced in the movie Pokémon 2000.

This list shows all 100 Pokémon from Generation II. They are listed by their National Pokédex number. The first Pokémon, Chikorita, is number 152. The last one, Celebi, is number 251.

Designing New Pokémon

When Pokémon Gold and Silver were made, two new types were added: "Dark" and "Steel." These new types helped make Pokémon battles more fair. They were especially good against the powerful Psychic-type Pokémon. The idea of breeding Pokémon was also new in these games. This allowed players to get Pokémon with specific skills. Some new Pokémon, like Pichu and Igglybuff, were actually baby versions of older Pokémon. You could usually only get these "baby Pokémon" by breeding their evolved forms.

Pokémon Gold and Silver were first shown in 1997. The early version of the game had a much bigger map. It also had about 40 Pokémon designs that were changed or removed before the games were released in 1999.
