What the Story Is About
The movie starts in a forest in the Johto region. A young Pokémon trainer named Sam is warned by an old woman, Towa, about the "Voice of the Forest." This voice belongs to Celebi, a special Pokémon that can travel through time.
Celebi is being chased by a Pokémon hunter and gets hurt. Sam helps Celebi escape. To get away, Celebi uses its powers to jump forward in time, accidentally taking Sam with it.
Forty years later, the old hunter meets a bad guy called the Iron Masked Marauder. The Marauder is a cruel member of Team Rocket and wants to control Celebi. He uses a special "Dark Ball" that makes Pokémon evil and super strong. He catches the hunter's Tyranitar with it and uses it to destroy things.
Meanwhile, Ash Ketchum, Misty, and Brock arrive in a town called Arborville. They spot the legendary Pokémon Suicune by a river. They talk to Professor Oak, who tells them he met Suicune many years ago.
The group goes into the forest with a local guide, Mr. White. They meet the elderly Towa and her granddaughter Diana, who warn them about the Voice of the Forest. Suddenly, Celebi and Sam appear from the past! Celebi hides, and Sam tries to understand that he's traveled through time.
Ash, Sam, Misty, and Brock find the injured Celebi. They decide to take it to the Lake of Life, which is said to have healing waters.
Saving Celebi
Jessie, James, and Meowth follow the children and team up with the Iron Masked Marauder. Wild Pokémon help guide the children to the lake, where Celebi is healed. That night, Ash and Sam become good friends, hoping Sam can return to his own time.
The next day, the Marauder finds the group. He uses a Dark Ball to capture Celebi. He then uses Celebi's huge powers over nature to cover it in giant, dragon-like armor made from the forest. Jessie gets caught too, and the Marauder says he plans to take over Team Rocket and the world.
Ash, his friends, and Suicune fight hard to free Celebi from the Marauder's control. Ash, Sam, and Pikachu manage to get inside Celebi's armor. They convince Celebi to fight back against the Marauder. Celebi remembers who it is and breaks free from the Dark Ball's evil influence.
The Marauder and Jessie fall into the lake as Celebi's armor breaks apart.
The Voice of the Forest
After the battle, Celebi seems to die in Sam's arms. Everyone tries to revive it, and Suicune purifies the lake, but nothing works. Just when all hope is lost, the "Voice of the Forest" appears. This voice is actually many Celebi from different times, and they magically bring their friend back to life!
Suddenly, the Marauder appears again and kidnaps Celebi, trying to escape with a jetpack. But Ash and Pikachu rescue Celebi. The Marauder crashes into the forest and is confronted by Towa, Diana, Mr. White, and the angry wild Pokémon. He is likely arrested.
Celebi takes Sam back to his own time. Sam promises to meet Ash again in the future. Ash, Misty, and Brock talk to Professor Oak about their adventure. Ash is sad that Sam is gone. However, Professor Oak tells him that true friendships can last through time.
The friends are confused about how Professor Oak knew Sam's name, since they never told him. In his lab, Professor Oak has Sam's old sketchbook, which shows that he was the young Sam all along! During the end credits, Tracey Sketchit finds Oak's sketchbook and puts it safely on a shelf.
