Meowth (ニャース, Nyāsu, Nyarth in original Japanese language versions) is a popular Pokémon character. It first appeared in the video games Pokémon Red and Blue. Meowth is well-known because of a special Meowth in the Pokémon TV show. This Meowth belongs to Team Rocket. It is one of the very few Pokémon that can talk like a human!

About Meowth's Design

Meowth looks like a cat. It has cream-colored fur, with brown paws and a brown tail tip. Meowth has whiskers, black and brown ears, and a shiny gold coin on its head.

This Pokémon usually sleeps during the day. At night, it walks quietly through city streets. Meowth can pull its claws back into its paws. This helps it move without making noise or leaving footprints.

Meowth loves things that are round and shiny. Its favorite items to collect are coins, because they are both round and shiny! Meowth gathers these coins and keeps them safe in its nest. However, another Pokémon called Murkrow sometimes tries to steal them.

Where Meowth Appears

Meowth in Video Games

Meowth can be found as a wild Pokémon in many different Pokémon video games. It is also a character in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games.

You can see Meowth in the Nintendo 64 game Pokémon Snap. It also appears in the Nintendo GameCube game Pokémon Channel. Meowth is even in the Super Smash Bros. fighting game series. In Super Smash Bros., Meowth comes out of a Poké Ball item. It uses its "Pay Day" move to throw coins at other players.

Meowth in the TV Show

A special Meowth appears in almost every episode of the Pokémon TV show. This Meowth is owned by Team Rocket agents Jessie and James. They are the main bad guys in the show.

This Meowth used to live in the city. It tried to impress a female Meowth named Meowzie. To do this, it learned to walk on two legs and speak human language. But Meowzie was not impressed. She called him a "freak." So, Meowth decided to join Team Rocket instead.

A clone of Meowth appeared in Pokémon: The First Movie. This clone could not talk or walk on two legs, because it had not learned those skills. The Meowth clone was shown again in Pokémon: Mewtwo Returns.

Another trainer named Tyson also owned a Meowth. This Meowth was dressed like Puss in Boots. It even beat Ash's Pikachu in the Hoenn Pokémon League!

Meowth in Other Media

Meowth has appeared in other places too. In the Pokémon Adventures comic books (manga), Meowth first showed up briefly in the very first chapter. It was one of the Pokémon that escaped from Professor Oak's Laboratory.

Meowth has also been part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. It first appeared in the Jungle card series. A special Meowth card was given out when people bought the Pokémon Trading Card Video Game.

Masakazu Kubo, who directs the Pokémon TV show, once said that Meowth is his favorite Pokémon. He mentioned that even though Meowth is not a main Pokémon in the games, it is very important in the TV show.
