List of generation VI Pokémon facts for kids
The sixth generation of the Pokémon world brought 72 new kinds of creatures! These Pokémon first appeared in the 2013 Nintendo 3DS games, Pokémon X and Y. Before the games, some of these Pokémon even showed up in the animated TV shows.
This generation made a big change in how the games looked. Pokémon went from flat, 2D pictures (called sprites) to cool, 3D models. Also, a brand new type was added for the first time since 1999: the Fairy type! This made a total of 18 different Pokémon types. The creators wanted these new Pokémon to feel special and match the culture of Europe, especially France.
A team of about 20 artists, led by Ken Sugimori and Hironobu Yoshida, created all the Pokémon. For the first time, Ken Sugimori asked for help with the main legendary Pokémon, Xerneas and Yveltal. Atsuko Nishida helped him bring their designs to life.
This list shows all 72 Pokémon from Generation VI. They are in order of their National Pokédex number. The first one is Chespin (number 650), and the last is Volcanion (number 721). We've also included special forms like Mega Evolutions here.
How Pokémon were Designed and Created
The games Pokémon X and Y started being made in 2010. They were released all over the world on October 12, 2013. The game director, Junichi Masuda, said the main ideas for Pokémon X and Y were beauty, friendship, and evolution. Beauty was the most important idea. Masuda felt that France was a great example of beauty, so his team visited the country in 2011 to study it.
Since the games take place in a region called Kalos (which is based on France), many designs came from European culture. For example, the legendary Pokémon Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde were inspired by Norse mythology. The creators focused more than usual on making each new Pokémon unique in this generation.
A huge change was moving from 2D pictures to 3D models. This meant a much bigger team was needed, with over 500 people working on the games! They made sure to keep the famous style of Pokémon art director Ken Sugimori. He has been designing Pokémon since the very first games in 1996.
A new type was also added: the Fairy type! This was the first new type since 1999. It was added to help balance out other types like Dragon, Fighting, Poison, and Steel. For example, Dragon types used to be weak against only a few things. Now, Fairy types help balance them. Many older Pokémon, like Jigglypuff and Gardevoir, also became Fairy types. Plus, 13 new Pokémon, like Sylveon, were made with the Fairy type.
A new battle feature called Mega Evolution was also added. This is a temporary change that makes a Pokémon much stronger. It was inspired by the ideas of bonds and evolution. Mega Evolutions were designed to make battles more exciting. They are only temporary to keep battles fair. A Pokémon needs to hold a special Mega Stone to Mega Evolve. The only Generation VI Pokémon that can Mega Evolve is Diancie. A similar idea, "Primal Reversion," was added in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. This is only for the legendary Pokémon Groudon and Kyogre.
The names X and Y were chosen early in the game's creation. They represent the x-axis and y-axis, which also shows different ways of thinking. The simple names helped with the games being released worldwide at the same time. Designers also tried to make Pokémon names the same in every country. This was hard because names needed to fit the Pokémon's look and not copy other names.
Masuda asked for the shapes "X" and "Y" to be the base for the legendary Pokémon on the game covers: Xerneas and Yveltal. Ken Sugimori usually designs legendary Pokémon by himself. But he needed help from designer Atsuko Nishida for Xerneas and Yveltal. Their designs took about 18 months to finish, which is three times longer than usual! Manga artist Hitoshi Ariga also helped design ten Pokémon for X and Y.
Fans think that the starter Pokémon, Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie, and their evolutions are based on common role-playing game character classes. Chespin might be like a knight or fighter. Fennekin could be a witch or mage. And Froakie might be a ninja or thief.
