Characters in the Super Smash Bros. series facts for kids
The exciting fighting game series Super Smash Bros. from Nintendo began in 1999. It features many well-known video game characters from different game series. There are more than 80 characters you can play as across all the games! Most of these characters are from games owned by Nintendo. However, some popular characters from other companies have also joined the fun. Besides the playable characters, there are also other characters like enemies, bosses, and power-ups that appear in the games.
Playable Fighters
Each game in the Super Smash Bros. series has many characters you can play as, called "fighters." Most of these fighters come from Nintendo's own game series. There are currently 85 fighters in the entire series.
Starting with Super Smash Bros. Brawl, characters from games not made by Nintendo began to be added. For example, characters like Cloud from Final Fantasy and Sonic from Sonic the Hedgehog joined the roster.
At the start of each game, some fighters are hidden. To unlock a hidden fighter, players need to complete certain goals. After that, they must defeat that fighter in a match to add them to their team!
In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, players can even create their own characters called Mii Fighters. Mii Fighters can wear different costumes. These costumes can be unlocked in the game or bought as downloadable content. Many costumes are based on characters from other games that are not playable fighters themselves. Some examples include Sans from Undertale and Cuphead from Cuphead.
Some fighters in the games share many moves and abilities with other characters. However, they have small differences that make them unique. In Ultimate, these characters are known as "Echo Fighters." Examples include Dark Pit (an Echo Fighter of Pit) and Daisy (an Echo Fighter of Peach).

Other Characters
Besides the playable fighters, the Super Smash Bros. games feature many other characters. These include:
- Enemies: Characters that players fight against in certain game modes.
- Bosses: Very strong enemies that players must defeat to progress.
- Assist Trophies: Items that summon a character to help you in battle for a short time. These characters are not playable fighters themselves.
- Pokémon: Many different Pokémon can appear from Poké Ball items to help in battle.
- Spirits: In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Spirits are characters from various video games that can power up your fighters.
