Kirby (series) facts for kids
The Kirby series is a popular collection of games, shows, and comics created by Japanese video game designer Masahiro Sakurai. It's all about the adorable pink hero, Kirby, and his exciting adventures on Planet Pop Star and beyond! The main games are developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo, who both own the series.
The Kirby series is mostly known for its fun platformer video games. The very first game, Kirby's Dream Land, came out in 1992. A year later, Kirby's Adventure introduced Kirby's special ability: he can copy enemy skills! This lets him use their powers to get through levels, making the games unique. The series also includes other types of games like puzzles and racing. Masahiro Sakurai designed these games to be easy for new players to enjoy, which is a big reason for their success. So far, there are thirty-nine Kirby video games, and over fifty million copies have been sold worldwide, making it one of the most popular game series ever!
Beyond games, the Kirby world also has an anime TV show called Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, which aired from 2001 to 2003, and several manga comic series.

Discovering Kirby's Fun Gameplay
Most Kirby games are side-scrolling platformers. You play as Kirby, a cute, round, pink hero. Your goal is to run, jump, and attack enemies. You'll explore many areas, solve puzzles, and battle big bosses.
Kirby has a special power: he can inhale objects and enemies! He can then spit them out like a projectile. Or, if he swallows certain enemies, he gets a Copy Ability. This lets him use that enemy's power in combat. Imagine swallowing a fire-breathing enemy and then being able to breathe fire yourself! Or eating a sword-wielding enemy and getting a sword to use.
Kirby can also inflate himself with air to fly! In most games, he can fly for as long as he wants. However, when flying, his attack options are limited to a small air bullet.
Many Kirby games have hidden items to find. Collecting these items can unlock new parts of the game. Sometimes, they are needed to create a special weapon to defeat the final boss. These fun elements make each Kirby game exciting and unique!
The series also has many spin-off games. These include different types of games like pinball, puzzles, racing, and even games that use motion controls.
Meet the Characters of Pop Star
The main hero of the series is Kirby. He lives in the peaceful Dream Land kingdom on Planet Popstar, which is shaped like a five-pointed star. When trouble comes to Dream Land, whether from Earth or space, Kirby is always ready to save his home and friends!
Many other characters appear in the series as friends and foes.
- King Dedede: He's a big, bird-like creature who looks like a blue penguin. King Dedede is the self-proclaimed ruler of Dream Land. He first appeared in Kirby's Dream Land. Sometimes his selfish nature makes him clash with Kirby. But often, when a bigger threat appears, he teams up with Kirby to save the day! In newer games, he's more of a friendly rival than a true enemy. King Dedede has appeared in almost every Kirby game.
- Meta Knight: This mysterious, masked warrior is similar in size and shape to Kirby. He is very chivalrous and dreams of fighting the strongest warrior in the galaxy. When he fights Kirby, he always offers Kirby a sword first. His face looks like Kirby's, but his exact connection to Kirby is a mystery.
- Waddle Dees: These common creatures live on Popstar. They appear in every Kirby game. Sometimes they are peaceful, and sometimes they are enemies. A special Waddle Dee, known as Bandana Waddle Dee, wears a blue bandana and often uses a spear. He sometimes helps Kirby and is even a playable character in some games!
- Whispy Woods: This recurring boss is a tree! He is often the first boss Kirby faces in many games and has appeared in other Kirby stories too.

Early Adventures: 1992-1999
The Kirby series started in 1990 with Masahiro Sakurai. He first drew a simple ball-shaped character. Everyone liked it so much that it became Kirby's final look! The character was first named Popopo, and the game was called Twinkle Popo. Later, the name Kirby was chosen to honor a lawyer named John Kirby.
The first game, Kirby's Dream Land, came out in 1992 for the Game Boy. It was a simple game with five levels. It introduced Kirby's ability to inhale enemies, but he couldn't copy their powers yet. Sakurai wanted Kirby to be pink, but the Game Boy only showed black and white. So, the international box art showed a white Kirby.
The second game, Kirby's Adventure, arrived in 1993 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. This game was a big step! It gave Kirby his famous Copy Abilities. He could now gain special powers by eating certain enemies. This game also clearly showed Kirby's pink color on all its box art.
After these first games, many spin-off games appeared. These included Kirby's Pinball Land (1993), a pinball game, and Kirby's Dream Course (1994), a golf-like game. Kirby's Dream Land 2 (1995) brought Copy Abilities to handhelds and introduced animal friends like Rick the hamster. Kirby Super Star (1996) was a collection of several games with new features like "Helpers."
New Dimensions: 2000-2004
In 2000, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards was released for the Nintendo 64. This was the first Kirby game to use 3D graphics! It also let Kirby combine two Copy Abilities to make new ones. King Dedede and a Waddle Dee were even playable in parts of the game.
Other unique games followed, like Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble (2000) for the Game Boy Color, which used motion sensors. Kirby Air Ride (2003) for the GameCube was a racing game. In 2002, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land was a remake of Kirby's Adventure for the Game Boy Advance with updated graphics.
Kirby & the Amazing Mirror (2004) for the Game Boy Advance was special. It let Kirby explore interconnected levels in any order, like a maze. You could also call up to three other Kirbys to help you!
Touch and Yarn: 2005-2011
The Nintendo DS brought new ways to play. Kirby: Canvas Curse (2005) used the touch screen to draw paths for Kirby to roll on. This was a very different way to control him!
Kirby: Squeak Squad (2006) brought back classic Kirby gameplay. It also used the touch screen to store items and Copy Abilities in Kirby's stomach. Kirby Super Star Ultra (2008) was a remake of Kirby Super Star for the DS, adding new games and updated graphics.
Kirby's Epic Yarn (2010) for the Wii had a unique art style where Kirby and the world looked like they were made of yarn. Kirby Mass Attack (2011) for the DS let you control many Kirbys at once using the touch screen.
Evolving Platforming: 2011-2021
Kirby's Return to Dream Land (2011) for the Wii returned to classic Kirby platforming. It allowed up to four players to play together! Players could choose to be Kirby, Meta Knight, King Dedede, or Bandana Waddle Dee.
To celebrate Kirby's 20th Anniversary, Kirby's Dream Collection (2012) was released for the Wii. It included six classic games, new challenge stages, and a history section.
The Nintendo 3DS saw new adventures like Kirby: Triple Deluxe (2014). This game had Kirby moving between the foreground and background of levels. It also included fun minigames like Kirby Fighters and Dedede's Drum Dash.
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse (2015) for the Wii U was a successor to Canvas Curse. It also used painting paths to guide Kirby. Kirby: Planet Robobot (2016) for the 3DS introduced the Robobot Armor, letting Kirby pilot a powerful mech.
For Kirby's 25th Anniversary in 2017, three new games were released: Team Kirby Clash Deluxe, Kirby's Blowout Blast, and Kirby Battle Royale.
Kirby Star Allies (2018) for the Nintendo Switch brought back the "Helper System." Kirby could throw "Friend Hearts" to turn enemies into allies. This allowed for exciting team-up moves!
True 3D Adventures: 2022-Present
In 2022, Kirby and the Forgotten Land was released for the Nintendo Switch. This was the first main Kirby game to feature true 3D gameplay! It became the highest-selling game in the series. This game also introduced Kirby's new logo.
A multiplayer party game, Kirby's Dream Buffet, was released in August 2022. In February 2023, a remake of Kirby's Return to Dream Land called Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe arrived on the Switch. It featured new abilities and a cool comic book-like art style.
In 2025, two new Kirby games were released. Star-Crossed World was an enhanced version of Kirby and the Forgotten Land with better graphics and a new game mode. Also released was Kirby Air Riders, a sequel to Kirby Air Ride, directed by the series creator, Masahiro Sakurai!

Anime Adventures
The Kirby games inspired a Japanese animated TV series called Hoshi no Kirby, which premiered in 2001. In North America, it was known as Kirby: Right Back at Ya!. The show ran until 2003 with 100 episodes.
The story follows Kirby's adventures after he crash-lands in Dream Land (called Cappy Town in the English version). He meets new friends, Tiff and Tuff. Kirby is a legendary Star Warrior, meant to save the universe from the evil Nightmare. But he woke up too early, so he's still childlike and his powers are growing.
King Dedede, the ruler of Dream Land, often orders monsters from Nightmare's company to try and get rid of Kirby. But Meta Knight, who seems loyal to King Dedede, secretly helps Kirby learn and grow his abilities. The series uses characters and ideas from the games to tell its own exciting story.

Kirby also stars in several manga comic series, drawn by many different artists.
