Amiibo (pronounced ə-MEE-boh; officially spelled amiibo; plural: Amiibo) is a special way to play video games from Nintendo. It lets you connect real-life figurines (small statues) to your Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, and Nintendo Switch video game consoles.

Amiibo toys are similar to other "toys-to-life" games like Skylanders, Disney Infinity, and Lego Dimensions. They use a special wireless technology called near field communication (NFC). This lets the toys talk to your game console. You can transfer information to and from the games, and sometimes even use the same Amiibo with different games!

You can use Amiibo directly with the Nintendo Switch, Wii U, and New Nintendo 3DS consoles because they have built-in NFC readers. If you have an older 3DS console, you can buy a special NFC adapter to use Amiibo. By September 2022, over 77 million Amiibo toys had been sold!

How Amiibo Started

Making the Idea a Reality

The name "Amiibo" comes from Japanese, French, and Spanish words that mean "friend" or "companion." Nintendo wanted these toys to feel like friends you play with!

Before Amiibo, other companies like Activision had success with games like Skylanders. These games used special figures with RFID chips that could connect to the game and save information. Nintendo saw how popular these games were.

In 2013, Nintendo tried out a similar idea with Pokémon Rumble U for the Wii U. This game used small figures that connected to the Wii U GamePad. Then, in 2014, Nintendo showed off a bigger plan for figures that could work with many different games on both the 3DS and Wii U. They called this idea "NFP" (Nintendo Figurine Platform).

On June 10, 2014, at a big video game event called E3, Nintendo officially announced Amiibo! One of the first games to use Amiibo was Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Nintendo's game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, said that Nintendo is not just a video game company, but also a toy company. This shows how important Amiibo were to them.

When Amiibo Were Released

The first Amiibo toys, based on Super Smash Bros., came out in North America on November 21, 2014. They were released in Europe a week later and in Japan in December 2014, at the same time as Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

More Amiibo, like those from the Super Mario series (Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Bowser, and Toad), came out in March 2015.

Nintendo also started making Amiibo in different forms. In 2015, they released Amiibo trading cards, starting with the Animal Crossing series. They also made soft yarn Amiibo plushies for the game Yoshi's Woolly World.

Even other game companies joined in! At E3 2015, Activision announced that Bowser and Donkey Kong Amiibo would work with their game Skylanders: SuperChargers. These special figures could switch between working as a Skylanders toy or an Amiibo.

Later, an Amiibo for the indie game character Shovel Knight was released. This was special because it was the first Amiibo for a character not made by Nintendo, and it was even produced by the game's own publisher, Yacht Club Games.

Many Amiibo have been released for the The Legend of Zelda series, including Link, Zelda, and other characters. These figures can unlock special items and features in games like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Other popular series like Metroid and Fire Emblem also have their own Amiibo. Even games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on Nintendo Switch can use Zelda Amiibo to give players special in-game items!

Collecting Amiibo

Amiibo became very popular very quickly! Sometimes, they would sell out even before they were officially released. Nintendo said that some Amiibo would be "limited-time offers," meaning they wouldn't always be available.

Because some Amiibo were hard to find, their prices sometimes went up a lot on online stores and auction sites. Some Amiibo even had small mistakes during manufacturing, like a Samus figure with two arm cannons instead of one. These "defect" Amiibo became very rare and sold for extremely high prices!

Sometimes, getting new Amiibo was tricky. When pre-orders for new waves of Super Smash Bros. and Splatoon Amiibo opened in the US, websites and store systems crashed because so many people wanted them. In the UK, a truck carrying special Splatoon Amiibo was stolen, making those figures very hard to get.

Nintendo explained that shipping delays also caused some Amiibo to be rare in certain areas. To help, some stores limited how many Amiibo each person could buy.

How Amiibo Connect to Consoles

The Wii U, New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 2DS XL, and Nintendo Switch all have built-in NFC readers. This means they can read Amiibo right away!

  • On the Wii U, you tap the Amiibo to the Wii U GamePad.
  • On the Nintendo Switch, you tap the Amiibo to the right Joy-Con controller or the Pro Controller.
  • The New Nintendo 3DS and New 2DS XL have the NFC reader in their bottom screen.

If you have an older Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL, or 2DS model, you can buy a separate NFC reader accessory. This small device plugs into your console and lets you use Amiibo.

What Amiibo Do in Games

Amiibo can do different things in games:

  • Save Data: Some games can save information onto your Amiibo. For example, in Super Smash Bros., you can train your Amiibo to fight like you, and it will remember its progress. However, an Amiibo can usually only save data for one game at a time. If you want to use it with another game that saves data, you might need to erase the old data first.
  • Unlock Content: Many games can read your Amiibo to unlock special things. For example, tapping a Mario Amiibo in Mario Kart 8 or Mario Kart 8 Deluxe might unlock a special racing suit for your Mii character. Different versions of the same character (like a Super Smash Bros. Mario and a Super Mario series Mario) usually do the same thing in games.

Many older Wii U and 3DS games have received updates to add Amiibo features. Even games made by other companies, like Bandai Namco Entertainment, have added Amiibo support!

Types of Amiibo

Amiibo come in different forms:

  • Figurines: These are the most common type, small plastic statues of characters.
  • Cards: These are flat cards that also have NFC chips inside.
  • Yarn Plushies: Some Amiibo, like the Yoshi figures, are soft, cuddly dolls!

No matter what type of Amiibo it is, if it's the same character, it will usually work the same way across all games that support that character. For example, a Mario figurine from the Super Smash Bros. series and a Mario figurine from the Super Mario series will have the same functions in games.

There are many Amiibo figurines and card series available.
