Waluigi is a fun fictional character from the popular Mario games. He is Luigi's main rival and often teams up with Wario. Together, they love to cause trouble and mischief in the Mario spin-off games. Waluigi was created by Fumihide Aoki from Camelot. His voice actor, Charles Martinet, says Waluigi feels a bit sorry for himself and likes to "cheat to win"!

He first appeared in the game Mario Tennis on the Nintendo 64 in 2000. At first, people had mixed feelings about him. But since then, Waluigi has become very popular and even a well-known Internet meme.

How Waluigi Was Created

The symbol "Γ" on Waluigi's hat and gloves is used to represent him in many games.

Waluigi was created when the game Mario Tennis was being made. The creators wanted a rival for Luigi. They also wanted a doubles partner for Wario. Fumihide Aoki created Waluigi, and Charles Martinet gives him his voice.

Waluigi's name is a mix of Luigi's name and the Japanese word warui (悪い). Warui means "bad." So, Waluigi's name means "bad Luigi."

Waluigi's Personality and Look

Waluigi is known for being mischievous and cunning. Charles Martinet, his voice actor, said that Waluigi often feels like everything goes right for everyone else, but not for him.

Waluigi's design is like an evil, twisted version of Luigi. He is very skinny and angular, with a pointy chin and a thin mustache. He also shares some features with Wario. These include a large pink nose, pointy shoes, a W-shaped mustache, and a wide grin. He also has bags under his eyes. Waluigi has a high-pitched, nasal voice.

He is the same age as Luigi. Waluigi wears black overalls and a purple long-sleeved shirt. He also has a purple hat with a yellow "Γ" symbol. This symbol is an upside-down L, just like Wario's W is an upside-down M. Waluigi also wears orange shoes and white gloves with the same yellow "Γ" symbol. When asked if Waluigi and Wario were brothers, Martinet said he didn't know. He felt they were just "two nice, evil guys who found each other."

Waluigi's Game Appearances

Waluigi first appeared in the Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Color versions of Mario Tennis. In these games, he was shown as Luigi's rival and Wario's doubles partner. He usually stays partners with Wario in most games. The only time he appeared without Wario was in Mario Tennis: Power Tour.

Since his first game, Waluigi has been a playable character in every Mario sports game. In games like Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour and Mario Power Tennis, he even holds up a sign for Camelot Software Planning. This shows that Camelot developed the games.

Waluigi in Mario Party and Mario Kart

Waluigi joined the Mario Party series starting with Mario Party 3. In this game, he has his own island full of traps and explosives. In the story mode, he is the second-to-last boss you face, after Bowser.

Waluigi also appears in the Mario Kart series. He first showed up in Mario Kart: Double Dash. He has been in all future console Mario Kart games, except for Mario Kart 7. He was cut from Mario Kart 7 because of time limits, even though his course, Waluigi Pinball, was still in the game.

Waluigi's Main Role in Dance Dance Revolution

Waluigi's biggest role so far was as the main bad guy in Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix. In this game, he causes chaos in the Mushroom Kingdom. He steals special items called Music Keys. He uses these keys to hypnotize the world with his dancing. His goal is to take over the world and spread chaos. Other keys are held by a Blooper, Wario, and Bowser.

Waluigi in Super Smash Bros. and Other Games

In the Super Smash Bros. series, Waluigi appears as a non-playable Assist Trophy. This started with Brawl. His purple color also appears as an alternate costume for Luigi. In later games, Mario and Wario can also wear Waluigi's colors. When Waluigi was revealed for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, the game director, Masahiro Sakurai, joked that "just because you try hard doesn't mean you'll make it into the battle."

Waluigi also makes smaller appearances. In Super Mario Maker, you can unlock a Mystery Mushroom costume of Waluigi for Mario to wear. In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, if you equip both the Wario and Luigi emblems, Mario will dress in Waluigi's colors. In Super Mario Odyssey, you can buy an outfit like Waluigi's for Mario. The description mentions Waluigi's wish to be in the spotlight. Waluigi also briefly appears as a figurine in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. A Rabbid version of him, called Bwaluigi, is a boss in that game, along with Bwario.
