Super Mario Odyssey is a fun platform game made by Nintendo. It came out for the Nintendo Switch on October 27, 2017. This game is part of the famous Super Mario series.
In Super Mario Odyssey, you join Mario and his new friend, Cappy. Cappy is a special hat that can come to life! With Cappy, Mario can take control of other characters and objects. They travel through many different worlds to save Princess Peach. His enemy, Bowser, wants to force Peach to marry him!
Unlike some newer Mario games that are more straightforward, Super Mario Odyssey lets you explore big, open worlds. This style is like older games such as Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine.
Nintendo's team, Entertainment Planning & Development, started making the game after Super Mario 3D World in 2013. They had many ideas and decided to make the game a "sandbox" style. This means you have lots of freedom to explore. The team wanted this game to be special for long-time Mario fans. It even has a vocal theme song, "Jump Up, Super Star!", which was a first for the series!
Critics loved Super Mario Odyssey. Many called it one of the best games in the Super Mario series. They especially liked how creative and new it felt. The game won many awards, including "Game of the Year." By September 2020, it had sold almost 19 million copies. This makes it one of the best-selling Switch games.

How to Play the Game
Super Mario Odyssey is a platform game where you control Mario. He travels to many different worlds, called "Kingdoms." He flies in his hat-shaped ship, the Odyssey. His goal is to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser. Bowser wants to marry her against her will!
The Kingdoms in the game are big and open, like in Super Mario 64. In each Kingdom, Mario needs to find special items called Power Moons. These Power Moons power up the Odyssey ship. When you collect enough, you can fly to new Kingdoms.
You'll find checkpoint flags all over each Kingdom. Once you activate a flag, you can instantly warp back to it. Some levels even have "flat" zones. In these areas, Mario becomes 2D, like in the original Super Mario Bros. game!
Mario's Moves and Cappy
Mario has his classic moves, like triple-jumping and wall-jumping. But now, he can also throw his cap! This cap is actually a hat spirit named Cappy. You can throw Cappy in different directions to attack enemies. You can also use him as a temporary platform to jump higher.
When you throw Cappy at certain enemies or objects, Mario can "capture" them. This means he takes control of them and can use their special abilities! For example, Mario can capture a Bullet Bill to fly across big gaps. He can capture a Tyrannosaurus to stomp on things. He can even capture a Spark Pylon to climb electric wires. If you capture a tank called a Sherm, you can shoot at enemies and break blocks.
You can use motion controls with the Joy-Con controllers for some actions. But you can also play the whole game with the Joy-Con attached to the Switch.
Collecting Coins and Power-Ups
Throughout the game, Mario collects coins. There are also special purple coins unique to each Kingdom. You can spend these coins on new hats and outfits for Mario. Some outfits are needed to complete certain tasks.
The game has a health system, like the Super Mario Galaxy games. Mario has unlimited lives, so you don't have to worry about running out. If Mario loses all his health, the only penalty is losing up to ten coins. You can also find 'Life-Up Hearts' to get three extra hit points.
Playing with a Friend
Super Mario Odyssey also lets you play with a friend! One player controls Mario, and the second player controls Cappy. Cappy can attack enemies on his own, which is very helpful!
After the Main Story
You need a certain number of Power Moons to move to the next Kingdom. But you can get these Moons from many places, so you don't always have to complete every main goal. After you defeat Bowser, even more Power Moons appear in each Kingdom!
Collecting lots of Power Moons unlocks extra outfits. It also opens up two special bonus areas. One is called Dark Side, where you fight many bosses in a row. You need 250 Power Moons to enter. The other is Darker Side, a challenging level that combines many parts of the game. You need 500 Power Moons to enter this one.
There's also a level based on Peach's Castle from Super Mario 64. You unlock this after beating the game. In this level, Mario can fight harder versions of bosses he's already beaten. He can also earn more Power Moons by completing special in-game achievements.
Photo Mode and Amiibo
The game has a photo mode. You can move the camera freely to take cool screenshots. You can even add filters and stickers to your pictures!
If you have Odyssey-themed Mario, Peach, or Bowser Amiibo figures, you can scan them. They give you special abilities in the game. They also unlock unique costumes that you can't get until you finish the game and collect many Power Moons. Other Amiibo can give you hints to find Power Moons.
Luigi's Balloon World and VR
A fun minigame called "Luigi's Balloon World" was added in an update on February 21, 2018. In this game, you hide a balloon somewhere in a Kingdom within 30 seconds. Then, other players try to find it! There's a leaderboard to see who has found the most balloons.
On April 25, 2019, the game was updated to work with the Nintendo Labo virtual reality kit. In this mode, Mario completes challenges in different Kingdoms. He recruits musicians and gives them instruments by finishing tasks related to music notes.
The Story of Super Mario Odyssey
Bowser and his wedding planners, the Broodals, kidnap Princess Peach from the Mushroom Kingdom. The Broodals are a family of rabbits who act like people. Bowser takes Peach aboard his airship because he wants to force her to marry him.
Mario tries to save Peach, but Bowser throws him off the ship. Mario lands in the Cap Kingdom. Bowser then stomps on Mario's cap, tearing it to pieces.
A piece of Mario's cap is found by Cappy. Cappy is one of the Cap Kingdom's hat-like creatures, called Bonneters. Cappy tells Mario that Bowser also kidnapped his sister, Tiara. Bowser plans to use Tiara as Peach's wedding tiara.
Cappy joins Mario and becomes Mario's new cap. Cappy gives Mario the power to throw his cap and temporarily capture other creatures and objects. This lets Mario use their special abilities. They travel to the nearby Cascade Kingdom and find an airship called the Odyssey. Then, they start chasing Bowser!
Mario and Cappy explore many Kingdoms. They collect Power Moons to fuel the Odyssey. They also battle the Broodals, who keep stealing things like a dress, a cake, and a bouquet from each Kingdom for Bowser's wedding.
Finally, Mario and Cappy catch up to Bowser in his own Kingdom. They defeat the Broodals for good in their giant robot, the Mecha-Broodal. But Bowser escapes to the Moon for his wedding!
Mario and Cappy fly the Odyssey to the Moon. They find Bowser inside a Moon Kingdom cathedral. Mario battles Bowser in a cavern and wins! He frees Peach and Tiara, but the cavern starts to fall apart. Mario quickly captures an unconscious Bowser and escapes to the surface with Peach and Tiara.
Peach thanks Mario for his help. Bowser then wakes up and tries to propose to Peach properly. Mario quickly tries to propose too! Peach is overwhelmed and turns down both of them. Peach, Cappy, and Tiara get on the Odyssey. Mario and Bowser are both sad until Peach tells Mario it's time to go home. Mario jumps onto the ship just in time, leaving Bowser stranded on the Moon.
In the end, Mario returns to the Mushroom Kingdom. He finds out Peach has packed her bags. She decided to take a vacation to all the Kingdoms Mario and Cappy visited, but this time, she's going because she wants to!
