Super Mario Sunshine (スーパーマリオサンシャイン, Sūpā Mario Sanshain) is an exciting platform game released by Nintendo in 2002 for the Nintendo GameCube. It was a big deal because it was the first Mario game that wasn't released right when a new Nintendo console came out. Instead, it launched about nine months after the GameCube arrived. This was different from past Nintendo consoles like the NES, SNES, and Nintendo 64, which all had a Mario game ready on their first day!

Story of Super Mario Sunshine
Mario and his friends, including Princess Peach and Toadsworth, head to a sunny place called Delfino Isle for a relaxing vacation. But their trip quickly turns into a big mess!
Mario's Big Problem
When they arrive, the island is covered in strange, goopy sludge. Even worse, the islanders think Mario is the one who made the mess! A judge on Delfino Isle blames Mario and tells him he has to clean up the entire island.
Meet F.L.U.D.D.
To help Mario with his huge cleaning job, he gets a special device called F.L.U.D.D. This stands for Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device. Mario straps this powerful water pump onto his back. F.L.U.D.D. can spray water to clean up the sticky goo.
Who is the Real Culprit?
As Mario starts cleaning, he discovers that someone who looks just like him, but is actually a shadowy figure, is the real culprit. This mysterious person has been making the island dirty and has even kidnapped Princess Peach! Mario soon learns that the shadowy figure is actually Bowser Jr., Bowser's son. Now, Mario must clean the island, defeat Bowser Jr., and rescue Princess Peach!
How to Play Super Mario Sunshine
Just like in Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine lets you explore many different worlds. Each world has several goals you need to complete.
Collecting Shine Sprites
Instead of collecting stars, Mario collects special items called Shine Sprites. These shiny sprites help bring light and happiness back to Delfino Isle. As Mario clears each world and collects enough Shine Sprites, new areas of the island become available for him to explore.
Using F.L.U.D.D.
F.L.U.D.D. is Mario's most important tool in this game. It helps him clean up the huge amounts of sludge and grime covering the island. F.L.U.D.D. holds a limited amount of water, so Mario needs to find pools of water to refill it often.
F.L.U.D.D. can do more than just spray water:
- Hover Nozzle: If Mario aims F.L.U.D.D. downwards, he can use the Hover Nozzle to float in the air for a short time. This helps him cross gaps or reach higher places.
- Rocket Nozzle: This nozzle shoots Mario high into the air, letting him reach very tall platforms.
- Turbo Nozzle: This nozzle makes Mario dash forward at super speed, allowing him to cross water quickly or break through certain obstacles.
Sometimes, Mario has to take F.L.U.D.D. off and jump around on his own. These parts of the game are often challenging and require careful platforming skills.
Making of Super Mario Sunshine
Nintendo had been thinking about a new Mario game for a long time after Super Mario 64. Ideas like Super Mario 64 2 and Super Mario 128 were considered but never fully made.
Early Ideas
Work on Super Mario Sunshine began with the idea of a water pump being a main part of the gameplay. At first, the creators worried that a water pump might not fit with Mario's usual adventures. They even tried using a human-like character instead of Mario, but it felt strange. They realized that "if there was a man next to Mario, there is a sense of incongruity."
Choosing F.L.U.D.D.
The team thought of ten different ideas for water nozzles. F.L.U.D.D. was chosen because it fit well with the game's sunny island setting, even though it wasn't everyone's first choice.
Music and Voices
The music for Super Mario Sunshine was created by Koji Kondo and Shinobu Tanaka. The soundtrack includes new songs and also classic Mario tunes, like the underground music from the original Super Mario Bros.. This game was also special because it was the only Mario game to have full English voice acting in its story scenes. Charles Martinet voiced Mario and Toadsworth, Jen Taylor voiced Princess Peach and Toad, Scott Burns was Bowser, and Dolores Rogers voiced Bowser Jr.
What Super Mario Sunshine Left Behind
Super Mario Sunshine brought many new ideas to the Mario series that appeared in later games.
New Characters and Items
- Shine Sprites: This game was the first to introduce the Shine Sprites, which have since appeared in other Mario games like Mario Kart DS.
- Bowser Jr.: Bowser's son, Bowser Jr., made his first appearance in Super Mario Sunshine. He has since become a regular character in many Mario games, including New Super Mario Bros., New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and various Mario Kart games like Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and Mario Kart Wii.
- Toadsworth: Princess Peach's elderly guardian, Toadsworth, also debuted in this game. He has appeared in other Mario adventures like Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Super Princess Peach.
- Petey Piranha: This giant piranha plant, known as Boss Packun (ボスパックン) in Japan, was also introduced in Super Mario Sunshine. He has appeared in New Super Mario Bros., Super Princess Peach, and many spin-off games.
New Gameplay Features
Super Mario Sunshine was the first 3D Mario platformer where Mario could ride Yoshi and have Yoshi change colors by eating different fruits. This fun feature later returned in the Wii game Super Mario Galaxy 2.
