Miitopia is a fun role-playing video game made by Nintendo. It first came out for the Nintendo 3DS in 2016 (in Japan) and 2017 (worldwide). Later, a new and improved version was released for the Nintendo Switch in 2021.
In this game, you create your own characters using Miis. You then go on an adventure to fight the evil Dark Lord, who is stealing faces from everyone in the land of Miitopia! The game got mixed reviews. People liked its funny life simulation parts and humor, but some found the battles a bit repetitive.

How to Play Miitopia
Miitopia is a role-playing game that also has parts of a life simulation. You start by choosing a "job" or class for your characters, like a warrior or a mage. As you play, you unlock even more unique classes.
Your playable characters are Miis that you create. Each Mii has a personality trait that changes how they act in battles. For example, a "kind" Mii might protect their friends.
Mii Relationships and Customization
Just like in the game Tomodachi Life, how your Miis get along outside of battles affects the game. If Miis don't like each other, it can make fighting harder! You can even bring Miis and their personalities from Tomodachi Life or your friend list into Miitopia.
The game also works with Nintendo's Amiibo figures. If you tap an Amiibo, your Miis can wear special costumes. The Nintendo Switch version added even more ways to customize your Miis with new makeup and wigs. This lets you make your characters look super unique, even more than what you can do in the console's Mii Maker app.
New Features on Nintendo Switch
The Nintendo Switch version also includes a horse that can help you in battles. This horse was not in the original 3DS game. Plus, there's a secret final dungeon called the Tower of Despair, which you can explore after finishing the Tower of Dread.
The Story of Miitopia
The game starts when your main character, a Mii you choose, arrives in Greenhorne Town. Soon, the evil Dark Lord attacks! He steals faces from Miis and uses them to turn peaceful creatures into scary monsters. Your Mii chooses a class and begins a journey to stop the Dark Lord.
The Journey Begins
As you travel, you meet more companions who join your team. You also meet the wise Great Sage. Your quest takes you to Greenhorne Castle, but the Dark Lord steals the faces of the King and Princess! You continue your adventure into the kingdom of Neksdor.
In Neksdor, the Dark Lord attacks again. He steals your companions and even your character's class! But a guardian gives your hero new powers. You then travel through Neksdor, meeting three new friends and the Genie of the Lamp.
Facing the Dark Lord
Next, your team goes to the Realm of the Fey. The Dark Lord attacks a third time, stealing your companions and your class again! The guardian gives you a new set of classes to choose from. Your hero must save the three Fab Fairies of the Realm. They will show you the way to the Dark Lord's castle in Karkaton.
Before you can open the castle door, the Dark Lord steals the Fab Fairies' faces. After you get their faces back, the Fairies open the door to Karkaton. Inside, the Dark Lord attacks one last time, stealing your newest companions. But he can't steal your hero's powers! With help from the Great Sage, you must save all your friends.
The Darker Lord and Beyond
You finally fight the Dark Lord. After you defeat him, you discover he was just a normal Mii possessed by a small blue wisp called the Dark Curse. The Dark Curse tries to possess your Mii, but the Great Sage steps in and becomes possessed instead, turning into the Darker Lord!
Your hero and team chase the Darker Lord through different lands like Powdered Peaks, Peculia, and Nimbus. You fight old bosses along the way. You reach the Darker Lord's Domain in The Sky Scraper. At the top, you go to the Otherworld for the final battle.
The Darker Lord steals the faces of six heroes, becoming the powerful Darkest Lord. You fight him with your last four team members. After the Darkest Lord is defeated, the Great Sage is free! The Sage traps the Dark Curse and explains its sad story. It was once a normal Mii who felt rejected and turned into a soul of hatred.
You get to choose: either destroy the Dark Curse or give it a new face and body. If you give it a new life, the Great Sage takes the Curse to help it make up for its mistakes. Your team is celebrated for saving Miitopia! After the credits, you unlock two new areas: Galados Isle and New Lumos. You can also unlock the Elf and Vampire fighting classes by completing certain quests.
Game Sales
The 3DS version of Miitopia sold over 168,000 copies in Japan by February 2017.
When the Nintendo Switch version launched in the UK, it sold 36% more copies than the 3DS version did at its launch. It was the second best-selling game that week. In Japan, the Switch version also launched at #2, selling 72,725 physical copies. This was three times more than the 3DS version's launch sales! By its second week, the Switch version became the #1 best-selling game in Japan.
As of March 2022, the Nintendo Switch version of Miitopia had sold 1.63 million copies around the world.
Legacy
Two songs from Miitopia, "Boss Battle Time" and "Boss: The Darkest Lord", were included in the popular fighting game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. A Nintendo Switch version of the game, made by Grezzo, was released on May 21, 2021.
