Characters of the Metroid series facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Metroid is a series of exciting science fiction action games made by Nintendo. In these games, you often explore big, open levels, fight enemies, and solve puzzles. You play as Samus Aran, a brave space bounty hunter. She battles against bad guys like the Space Pirates and strange creatures called Metroids.

Protagonists

Samus Aran

Samus Aran is the main hero of the Metroid series. When she was young, her home planet was attacked by the Space Pirates, and their leader, Ridley, killed her parents. The mysterious Chozo aliens saved Samus and raised her to be a strong warrior.

Samus wears a special futuristic suit called the Power Suit. This suit helps her move easily and has powerful weapons like blasters and rockets. It also protects her from dangerous planets. Samus is so famous that she also appears as a playable character in the Super Smash Bros. fighting games.

Chozo

The Chozo are a wise and mysterious alien race in the Metroid universe. They were very advanced in technology and built amazing statues. They also shared their knowledge with other alien species.

The Chozo were important in Samus's life. They raised her and gave her some of their DNA, which helped her survive and become stronger. They also created her Power Suit. The Chozo were also responsible for creating the Metroids. They made Metroids to fight against dangerous creatures called X Parasites.

In Metroid Dread, we learn that the Chozo had two main tribes: the peaceful Thoha (who became scientists) and the warrior Mawkin. The Thoha created Metroids to fight the X parasites. The Mawkin leader, Raven Beak, wanted to use Metroids as weapons. He killed most of the Thoha, leaving only one, Quiet Robe. Sadly, by the end of Metroid Dread, the Chozo are believed to be extinct.

In the Metroid Manga, which tells stories before the games, two Chozo named Old Bird and Gray Voice helped raise Samus. Gray Voice even gave his DNA to Samus.

Galactic Federation

The Galactic Federation is like the government of the galaxy. It's made up of different alien species working together. They often hire Samus for difficult missions, which is what many of the games are about.

Samus used to be a soldier in the Federation's military before she became a bounty hunter. Their soldiers wear special armor and use advanced weapons. In some games, the Federation's secret groups try to create dangerous bio-weapons, which Samus often has to stop.

Baby Metroid

The Metroid larva, often called the Baby Metroid, is the last Metroid of its kind after the events of Metroid II: Return of Samus. In Super Metroid, a Metroid egg hatched, and the baby Metroid thought Samus was its mother. Samus took it to a space colony, but it was stolen by the Space Pirates.

Finding the Baby Metroid becomes a big part of the story. It even helps Samus in the final battle against Mother Brain by giving her energy, but it is destroyed. Samus then gets a super powerful weapon from the Baby Metroid's energy and uses it to defeat Mother Brain. Samus is very sad about its death.

Antagonists

Metroids

Metroid (species)
Artwork of the larval form of the series' titular alien species, from Metroid: Samus Returns.

The Metroids are floating, jellyfish-like creatures that can drain the life energy from other living things. This makes Samus's health drop very quickly if they touch her. The Chozo created Metroids as a weapon to fight the dangerous X Parasites.

Metroids are a big part of the Metroid games. Samus either fights them or tries to stop the Space Pirates or the Galactic Federation from using their powers for bad reasons.

In games like Metroid II: Return of Samus, Metroids go through different stages as they grow, like Alpha, Gamma, Zeta, Omega, and even a Queen Metroid. They are usually weak to ice weapons like the Ice Beam. These weapons can freeze them, making them easy to defeat with a missile.

Many people love the Metroid design. Game Informer called them their favorite alien race in video games, saying they look "truly alien" and are "an immediate and real danger."

Mother Brain

Mother Brain is a major villain and a boss that appears many times in the series. The Chozo originally created her to help unite the galaxy. However, when the Space Pirates invaded the planet Zebes, Mother Brain decided they were a "perfect force" to bring order and became one of their leaders.

Mother Brain looks like a very large brain with robot parts and one eye, usually inside a glass tube. Samus has to break the tube to hurt her. In Super Metroid, Mother Brain even reveals a giant, scary body after her tank is destroyed. Samus defeats Mother Brain multiple times, but she keeps coming back in different forms.

MB

MB, also called Melissa Bergman, was created by scientists on a place called the Bottle Ship. She was a copy of the original Mother Brain. Scientists wanted to use her to control Metroids and Space Pirates they were creating.

At first, MB was just a computer program. But then scientists gave her an artificial human body so she could connect with the Metroids better, like Samus did with the Baby Metroid. MB started to have her own feelings, just like the original Mother Brain. This made the scientists worried, so they tried to reprogram her.

But MB became angry and caused problems on the Bottle Ship. She was eventually stopped by Samus and the Marines.

Space Pirates

The Space Pirates are a mean group of "interstellar nomads" who are the main bad guys in the Metroid series. They look like human-like reptiles, insects, or crabs. They live in a hive-like society, similar to bees or ants. They attack colonies and ships and are very interested in Metroids. They want to use Metroids for energy, as soldiers, or for experiments.

Important leaders of the Space Pirates include Ridley, Mother Brain, and Kraid. Even though Samus often defeats them, a secret group within the Galactic Federation sometimes brings them back to life to use as bio-weapons.

Ridley

Ridley is the biggest enemy of Samus Aran. He is a smart, dragon-like creature. Even though Samus kills him many times, the Space Pirates (or sometimes the Galactic Federation by accident) bring him back using clones or robots.

Ridley is responsible for attacking Samus's home planet and killing her parents. He is the villain who appears most often in the Metroid games. He might not always be the main bad guy in every game, but he is always a major threat.

Kraid

Kraid is a giant, lizard-like monster and a high-ranking member of the Space Pirates. He is known for his huge belly. He first appeared in the original Metroid game. In Super Metroid, he is shown as a massive boss, two screens tall!

Kraid returns in Metroid Dread after being captured and experimented on by Raven Beak. He is a big boss in a lava-filled area called Cataris. Kraid also makes appearances in the background of stages in the Super Smash Bros. games.

Metroid Prime / Dark Samus

Metroid Prime and its later form, Dark Samus, are the main villains of the Metroid Prime games. Metroid Prime is a strange, black creature with red eyes. It can control and change anything it touches in a horrible way.

Metroid Prime was created when a meteor called a Leviathan crashed on a planet, releasing its core. This core mixed with a Metroid, creating Metroid Prime. After Samus defeats Metroid Prime, it steals parts of Samus's special Phazon Suit to become Dark Samus, a black copy of Samus.

In Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Dark Samus chases a dangerous substance called Phazon. Samus fights her many times and eventually defeats her. But Dark Samus can reform herself, even in deep space!

In Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Dark Samus tries to spread Phazon all over the universe. She attacks planets and even brainwashes Space Pirates. Samus finally defeats Dark Samus on the planet Phaaze, which then explodes, destroying all the Phazon in the galaxy.

Dark Samus also appears in the Super Smash Bros. games as an Assist Trophy and a playable character, similar to Samus.

Ing Horde

The Ing horde are powerful and smart dark creatures that appear in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. They can possess anything, whether it's a machine, a living thing, or even a Metroid. They came from a dark, mirror version of the planet Aether, created when a meteor crashed there.

The Luminoth, the people of Aether, fought the Ing for many years. Samus arrives and helps the Luminoth in their war. She eventually fights the Emperor Ing, the leader of the Ing horde. Samus defeats the Emperor Ing, which destroys the dark planet and the Ing horde forever.

Gorea

Gorea is a very powerful and evil being that crashed on a planet long ago. In Metroid Prime Hunters, Gorea copied the bodies and weapons of the Alimbics, the planet's inhabitants, and destroyed their civilization.

To stop Gorea, the last of the Alimbics trapped it in a special "Seal Sphere" and launched it into space. Gorea's body is made of shapeless gas, so it can change into many different forms during battle.

Rival Bounty Hunters

Sylux

Sylux is one of the bounty hunters in Metroid Prime Hunters. He is Samus's rival and hates the Galactic Federation. Even after Samus helps him, he still seems to want to fight her. He has been hinted to be important in future Metroid Prime games.

Kanden

Kanden is another rival bounty hunter in Metroid Prime Hunters. He was created to be a perfect soldier, which makes him unpredictable and dangerous. He wants to prove he is the best hunter. His special weapon is the Volt Driver, which shoots lightning.

Noxus

Noxus is a bounty hunter from the Vhozon race in Metroid Prime Hunters. He wants to find the ultimate power to keep it from bad people. His weapon is the Judicator, which can freeze enemies.

Spire

Spire is the last survivor of the Diamont race and a rival in Metroid Prime Hunters. He is looking for answers about his lost people. His weapon is the Magmaul, which shoots molten projectiles.

Trace

Trace is a feared member of the Kriken Empire and a rival in Metroid Prime Hunters. He wants to find new planets for his people to invade. His weapon is the Imperialist, a very accurate sniping gun.

Weavel

Weavel is a Space Pirate who became a cyborg after Samus badly injured him. In Metroid Prime Hunters, he is also looking for the ultimate power. His weapon is the Battlehammer.

Galactic Federation Bio-Weapons Research Projects

A secret group within the Galactic Federation government is responsible for bad events in Metroid: Other M and Metroid Fusion. This group secretly wanted to create Metroids and other creatures as bio-weapons. They even used DNA from the Baby Metroid to make new Metroids that were not affected by cold.

Their plans often go wrong, leading to dangerous situations that Samus has to fix. In Other M, their project was ruined by a cloned Ridley and the rebellion of MB. In Fusion, Samus discovers they are still trying to capture X Parasites for research, which is very dangerous. Samus has to crash the research station to stop them.

Nightmare

The Nightmare is a monster cyborg that can control gravity. It was created by the Galactic Federation's secret bio-weapons project. Samus first fights the Nightmare in Other M. In Fusion, an X parasite infects and revives the Nightmare, making it even more dangerous.

X Parasites

The X Parasite is a unique and dangerous parasite seen in Metroid Fusion, Metroid: Samus Returns, and Metroid Dread. They are the main villains of Fusion.

X Parasites look like floating, jelly-like blobs. They can squeeze into tiny spaces and are hard to hit. They can also split into smaller copies of themselves.

X Parasites infect other living things, taking over their bodies and memories. They kill their host and then perfectly copy its DNA. They can even copy robots and Samus's Power Suit.

After Samus was infected by an X, parts of her Power Suit were removed. This allowed an X to copy Samus and her suit, creating a dangerous clone called SA-X. SA-X was as powerful as Samus at her strongest. It could even use Samus's Ice Beam and hunt Metroids, which are the X's natural predators.

SA-X caused a lot of trouble on the B.S.L. research station, spreading X parasites everywhere. Samus eventually defeats SA-X, but its core escapes. Later, SA-X surprisingly saves Samus from a powerful Omega Metroid. Samus then absorbs SA-X's core, getting her Ice Beam back and becoming stronger. She then crashes the station into the planet SR388, destroying all the X Parasites.

In Metroid Dread, X Parasites are released again by Raven Beak. Some bosses are X Parasites, and Raven Beak himself gets infected by an X after Samus defeats him. The destruction of the planet ZDR at the end of the game likely means the X Parasites are finally extinct.

Raven Beak

Raven Beak is the leader of the Chozo warrior tribe called Mawkin and the main villain of Metroid Dread. He played a big role in spreading Metroids and X Parasites from the planet SR388. He even gave his DNA to Samus, making them related.

Raven Beak wanted to create an army of Metroids to conquer the galaxy. He killed most of the Thoha tribe (who created Metroids), keeping only Quiet Robe alive to control the Metroids. But the X Parasites ruined his plans.

When he learned Samus had Metroid DNA, he decided to capture and clone her instead. He fought Samus, but when her Metroid powers fully awakened, she easily defeated him. In a final attempt, he merged with an X Parasite, becoming Raven Beak X, a giant monster. Samus destroyed this form using her full Metroid powers.

Supporting characters

Adam Malkovich

Adam Malkovich was Samus's old commanding officer in the Galactic Federation army. He appears in person in Metroid: Other M. He is usually calm and collected. Samus and Adam had a very close relationship; Samus saw him like a father, and he saw her like a daughter.

Adam made a big sacrifice in Other M by entering a dangerous area called Sector Zero and activating its self-destruct, saving Samus. In Metroid Fusion, it's revealed that the computer on Samus's ship has Adam Malkovich's consciousness. This computer helps Samus throughout the game. He also appears in Metroid Dread, though he is mostly impersonated by Raven Beak.

Aurora Unit 242

Aurora Unit 242 is a special organic supercomputer that appears in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. It was meant to be part of a bigger computer system, but Dark Samus interfered with the plans.

Fleet Admiral Castor Dane

Fleet Admiral Castor Dane is the commander of the Galactic Federation Starfleet. He lost his family to the Space Pirates when he was young and wants revenge. In Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, he hires Samus and other bounty hunters to fight the Space Pirates who are using Phazon. At the end of the game, he leads the Federation fleet to attack Phaaze, the source of Phazon.

Rundas

Rundas is a bounty hunter hired by the Galactic Federation in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. He can control ice. During a battle, he and other hunters are infected by Dark Samus's Phazon. Rundas eventually gives in to the corruption and becomes an enemy Samus must fight. After Samus defeats him, Dark Samus absorbs his remains and gains his ice powers.

Ghor

Ghor is another bounty hunter hired by the Galactic Federation in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. He is mostly a cyborg, having replaced 94% of his body with robot parts after being injured in a war. He uses heavy battle armor that gives him great strength but also makes him aggressive. When he is corrupted by Dark Samus, he becomes even more violent. Samus defeats him, and Dark Samus absorbs his remains and plasma beam.

Gandrayda

Gandrayda is a bounty hunter hired by the Galactic Federation in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. She can shapeshift and control electricity. She is playful but becomes very vicious when corrupted by Phazon. She tries to trick Samus but is defeated. Like Rundas and Ghor, her remains and electric powers are absorbed by Dark Samus.

Anthony Higgs

Anthony Higgs is a soldier in Adam's team and an old friend of Samus. He is usually cheerful and reliable. He affectionately calls Samus "Princess" and saves her from Ridley twice. He seems to die in one part of the game but survives. He helps Samus and Madeline Bergman expose the Federation's secret bio-weapons research.

Madeline Bergman

Madeline Bergman is the adopted mother of MB and the director of the Bottle Ship. She cared deeply for MB. When MB went on a rampage, Madeline was scared but tried to reach out to her. After MB was killed, Madeline was heartbroken. She later helps Samus and Anthony expose the Federation's secret bio-weapons research.

Etecoons and Dachora

The Etecoons and Dachora are friendly creatures Samus meets on planet Zebes in Super Metroid. They teach her special moves like the Wall-jump and Shinespark. Samus can save them during the planet's self-destruction. She meets them again in Metroid Fusion, and they help her with her ship.

Quiet Robe

Quiet Robe is the last surviving member of the peaceful Thoha tribe of the Chozo. Raven Beak kept him alive to control Metroids and E.M.M.I. robots. He helps Samus in Metroid Dread by explaining Raven Beak's plans. Sadly, he is killed by one of Raven Beak's drones. Later, an X Parasite reanimates him, but even then, he helps Samus escape the planet.
