The game first launched in Europe and Japan in November 2017. North American players got to enjoy it starting in January 2018. Kirby Battle Royale received a mix of reviews from critics. It sold well in its first week in Japan, with 28,000 copies purchased.

Get Ready to Battle in Kirby Battle Royale!

Kirby Battle Royale is a fast-paced party and arena fighting game. You play from a top-down view, guiding the adorable hero Kirby. Your goal is to compete against other Kirbys in various battlegrounds.

The game offers a single-player story mode called "The Cake Royale." You can also team up with friends in cooperative play or challenge them in multiplayer battles. These modes are available both locally and online.

How to Play: Game Modes and Abilities

There are 10 different game modes to enjoy, plus the main story mode, "The Cake Royale." Each mode offers a unique challenge and lots of fun!

Exciting Game Modes

  • The Cake Royale: King Dedede hosts a tournament with many colorful Kirby clones. You guide Kirby through five "leagues," playing different game modes to win.
  • Battle Arena: Your goal is to defeat all opponents and be the last one standing. Opponents can revive after a short time, so stay alert!
  • Apple Scramble: Players form two teams. The team that collects and harvests more apples than the other team wins.
  • Coin Clash: Collect as many coins as you can within a time limit. Watch out for a ghost that tries to steal your coins!
  • Attack Riders: Hit other players to collect "chips." Sometimes, special machines appear. Attacking while on a machine gives you extra chips.
  • Crazy Theater: Complete specific tasks before your opponents do. Tasks might include carrying apples, attacking rivals, or dodging bomb blasts.
  • Rocket Rumble: Gather fuel cubes and load them into your rocket. The more cubes you collect, the higher your rocket will fly. The player whose rocket goes highest wins!
  • Robo Bonkers: Work together or compete to deal the most damage to a giant robot version of Bonkers. The player who causes the most damage wins.
  • Slam Hockey: Hit a giant hockey puck towards your opponents to score goals. It's a wild game of hockey with a Kirby twist!
  • Ore Express: Collect ore and throw it into a passing train. The player who collects the most ore by the end wins.
  • Flag Ball: Throw a ball at your team's flag to score points. Be careful, though, as the opposing team can grab your flag and attack you. The first team to score seven goals wins the match.

Kirby's Copy Abilities and Friends

Kirby can use many different Copy Abilities in the game. These abilities give him special powers and attacks. The abilities available include Sword, Bomb, Beetle, Spear, Cutter, Fighter, Ninja, Whip, Parasol, Hammer, Doctor, Tornado, and Ice.

Two more abilities, Mirror and Sleep, were added later through free game updates. In total, there are 15 unique abilities for Kirby to use!

Besides Kirby, you can also play as three other characters: Waddle Dee, Meta Knight, and King Dedede. These characters have moves similar to some of Kirby's abilities, but with their own special twists. For example, Waddle Dee is like the Parasol ability, Meta Knight is similar to Sword, and King Dedede uses moves like the Hammer ability.

The Sweet Story of the Cake Royale

The story begins with Kirby taking a nap under a tree. He wakes up to find a flyer for King Dedede's "Cake Royale" tournament. The grand prize is "the cake of your dreams"!

On his way to the castle, Kirby meets a tired Bandana Waddle Dee, who also wants the cake. As Kirby helps Bandana Waddle Dee to the castle, a blue clone of Kirby ambushes them. Kirby quickly defeats it.

When they arrive, Kirby and Bandana Waddle Dee discover King Dedede is using a special machine called the Kirby Printer. This machine creates many different-colored Kirby clones!

Kirby and Bandana Waddle Dee fight their way through the tournament's leagues: beginner, bronze, silver, gold, and platinum. They even defeat Meta Knight along the way. King Dedede gets more and more annoyed as Kirby keeps winning.

In the platinum league championship, King Dedede challenges the duo himself but is defeated. Still refusing to give up, he challenges Kirby to a three-against-one duel, which he also loses. In a final attempt to win, King Dedede uses a giant robot. However, Kirby defeats him again! Both the robot and the Kirby Printer are destroyed, making all the Kirby clones disappear. Finally, Kirby and Bandana Waddle Dee receive their well-deserved dream cake!

Making the Game: Development and Release

Kirby Battle Royale was created by HAL Laboratory and released by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS. Tadashi Kawai directed the game. He also directed other Kirby fighting games like Super Kirby Clash (2019) and Kirby Fighters 2 (2020). This game was part of the celebration for the 25th anniversary of the Kirby series.

The game was first hinted at during a Nintendo Direct event on April 12, 2017. Nintendo announced two other Kirby games and mentioned an upcoming multiplayer action game for the 3DS. The official name, Kirby Battle Royale, was revealed in another Nintendo Direct on September 13, 2017.

A free demo was released in Europe on October 19, 2017, through the Nintendo eShop. It let players try out three game modes and three Copy Abilities. Players could also unlock Meta Knight early. The demo became available in North America on January 4, 2018.

Kirby Battle Royale was released in Australia on November 4, 2017. It then came out in Europe on November 10, 2017, and in Japan on November 30, 2017. North American players could buy the game starting January 19, 2018.

Before the game's full release, Nintendo held polls in different regions to find out which Copy Abilities were players' favorites. The Mirror ability won in North America and was later added to the game. After the game was released, a second poll was held. The Sleep ability won in all three regions and was also added to the game through a free update.
