Kirby's Star Stacker is a fun puzzle video game starring Kirby, the adorable pink hero! It was created by HAL Laboratory and released by Nintendo for the Game Boy in 1997. This game is a special spin-off from the main Kirby series. Its gameplay is a bit like other popular puzzle games where you match blocks.
In May 2025, Kirby's Star Stacker became available on the Nintendo Classics service for the Nintendo Switch. This allowed even more players to enjoy this classic puzzle adventure. A special remake of the game was also made for the Super Famicom in Japan.

Mastering Kirby's Star Stacker Gameplay
Kirby's Star Stacker challenges players with falling blocks, much like other puzzle games from its time. Your main goal is to collect as many stars as you can. You do this by matching pairs of blocks that drop from the top of your screen. These blocks are actually Kirby's friends from Kirby's Dream Land 2!
Meet Kirby's Animal Friends
There are three types of friendly blocks you'll see:
- Rick the hamster
- Coo the owl
- Kine the fish
To score points, you need to "sandwich" stars between two matching friend blocks. For example, if you have a star, place a Rick block on one side and another Rick block on the other. When you score stars, they disappear along with the matching blocks. This clears space on your screen.
Winning and Losing the Game
The game ends if your stack of falling blocks reaches the very top of the play area. So, it's super important to keep clearing blocks and scoring stars! This strategy helps you stay in the game longer and achieve high scores.
Exciting Game Modes to Explore
Kirby's Star Stacker offers several ways to play, each with its own fun challenge.
Round Clear: The Main Adventure
This is the main part of the game. It has five different difficulty levels: Normal, Hard, Very Hard, Super Hard, and Insane. Each difficulty has many rounds. To clear a round, you must eliminate a certain number of stars. Every stage has a unique theme, like a spooky forest or outer space. When you finish a round, you get special artwork related to that stage's theme.
VS Mode: Challenge a Friend
Want to play against someone else? The VS mode is for you! This multiplayer mode lets two players compete. You will need two copies of the game, one for each cartridge, to play together.
Challenge Mode: Endless Fun
Challenge mode is an endless game where you try to clear as many stars as possible. The blocks keep rising from the bottom, adding new rows. Your goal is to keep playing until the blocks reach the top. Just like in Round Clear, you can earn special in-game artwork based on how many stars you collect. These pictures often encourage you to try even harder next time!
Time Attack: Race Against the Clock
In Time Attack mode, you have three minutes to eliminate as many stars as you can. It's a fast-paced challenge to test your speed and puzzle-solving skills.
Tracking Your Achievements: High Scores
For both Challenge and Time Attack modes, the game keeps track of the top three scores. This high score table lets you see how well you've done and encourages you to beat your own records or those of your friends!
Kirby no Kirakira Kids: The Super Famicom Remake
Kirby no Kirakira Kids (which means Kirby's Sparkling Kids) is also known as Kirby's Super Star Stacker. This version was released in 1998 for the Super Famicom in Japan. It was first distributed through the Nintendo Power flash RAM service. Later, on June 25, 1999, it received a standard cartridge release.
Gameplay and Story Enhancements
Kirby no Kirakira Kids is a remake of the Game Boy Kirby's Star Stacker. It has almost the same puzzle gameplay. You still remove falling star blocks by placing matching animal friends (Rick, Coo, and Kine) on either side. A big improvement in this version is the story mode. In story mode, Kirby faces off against several opponents. Many of these characters are from other Kirby games, especially Kirby Super Star.
Release History and Western Debut
The Japanese title for this Super Famicom game is exactly the same as the Japanese title for the Game Boy version. There were plans to release this game outside of Japan. However, these plans stopped when Nintendo of America stopped shipping SNES games in 1997. This meant the game was only available in Japan for a long time.
This Super Famicom version later became available on the Wii Virtual Console in Japan on January 5, 2010. It also joined the Nintendo Classics service in Japan on July 21, 2022. Finally, on September 6, 2023, it was released for the first time in Western countries. It was released under the same Western title as the original Game Boy game, Kirby's Star Stacker.
