Gyarados (ギャラドス, Gyaradosu) is a powerful and famous Pokémon from the Pokémon world. It was created by Ken Sugimori for the first Pokémon video games, Red and Blue. Gyarados has appeared in many games, TV shows, movies, and toys.
This Pokémon is known as the "Atrocious Pokémon" because of its fierce temper. Gyarados is the evolved form of Magikarp. Once it gets really angry, it won't stop until everything around it is destroyed. Unshō Ishizuka is the voice actor for Gyarados in both Japanese and English.
Gyarados appears many times in the Pokémon TV show. Different trainers, like Misty, Lance, Crasher Wake, and Nurse Joy, have owned one. In the Pokémon Adventures comic books, two different Gyarados are shown. One belongs to Misty and is traded between Red and Blue. The other is a special red Gyarados owned by Silver. Gyarados is very popular and is known as one of the most powerful Pokémon.
Design and Features
Gyarados was one of the first 151 Pokémon ever created. It was designed by Ken Sugimori for the original Pokémon Red and Blue games. The name "Gyarados" comes from Japanese. When the games were translated for other countries, Nintendo decided to keep the original Japanese name.
Gyarados looks like a dragon, especially the dragons you might see in Chinese stories. Its design is based on an old Chinese legend. This legend says that a carp (a type of fish) can turn into a powerful dragon if it swims strongly upstream.
Gyarados has a long, snakelike body that is mostly blue. Its belly is a pale yellow color. It has four white fins along its back and a very large mouth. Gyarados is famous for being very angry and destructive. When it gets into a rage, it can keep going for a whole month! This strong temper is because of big changes that happen in its brain when it evolves from Magikarp. People say that Gyarados sometimes appear during human conflicts and can cause a lot of damage. You can usually find Gyarados in large bodies of water, like lakes, ponds, or even the ocean.
Where Gyarados Appears
In Video Games

Gyarados first appeared in the very first Pokémon video games, Red and Blue. It has been in every main Pokémon game since then. You can often find Gyarados by fishing with a Super Rod. It evolves from Magikarp when Magikarp gains enough experience in battle.
In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal (and their remakes), there's a special red Gyarados in the Lake of Rage. This red Gyarados is a "Shiny Pokémon," which means it has a different color than usual. You get one chance to catch it. Catching or defeating this Gyarados starts an important part of the story where you battle against Team Rocket. Many strong trainers in the games use Gyarados, including Blue, Lance, and Cyrus.
Gyarados can also get a special "Mega Evolution" in Pokémon X and Y. When it Mega Evolves, it becomes even stronger and changes its type to Water and Dark.
Gyarados also appears in many other Pokémon games. These include Pokémon Snap, Pokémon Trading Card Game, and Pokémon Go. In Pokémon Go, getting a Gyarados is quite a challenge! You need 400 Magikarp candies to evolve it, which is more than almost any other Pokémon in the game. In Pokkén Tournament, Gyarados can be seen in the background of some battle arenas.
In the TV Show
Gyarados first appeared in the very first Pokémon episode, Pokémon - I Choose You!, swimming in a river. Later, in an episode called Pokémon Shipwreck, James kicked his Magikarp, and it evolved into a Gyarados!
Misty also owns a Gyarados. At first, she was scared of Gyarados because of a bad experience. But she bravely overcame her fear and added one to her team when she took over the Cerulean City Gym.
Two episodes, Talkin' 'Bout an Evolution and Rage Of Innocence, focused on a special red Gyarados. This Gyarados was causing a lot of destruction until Lance caught it. This same Gyarados later appeared again to help stop the fighting between the powerful Groudon and Kyogre. Gyarados has appeared many other times with different trainers, like Crasher Wake and Nurse Joy. In later seasons, a Shiny red Gyarados and its Mega Evolved form were used by the villain Lysandre, the leader of Team Flare.
In Comic Books
In the Pokémon Adventures comic series, Gyarados first appears in the Red, Green & Blue chapter. An angry Gyarados attacks its own trainer, Misty. But Red helps catch it again and returns it to her. Later, Misty trades this Gyarados to Red for his Krabby. Red then temporarily trades Gyarados to Blue. Gyarados is shown as one of Blue's strong Pokémon in later stories, used in battles against powerful Pokémon like Entei. Eventually, Blue returns Gyarados to Red.
A red Gyarados was also the leader of a group of Gyarados in the comics. When Team Rocket used a radio tower to make Pokémon go wild, these Gyarados became very angry. In the end, Silver caught the red Gyarados. After a big battle, this Gyarados was frozen at the bottom of the Lake of Rage. Later, Lt. Surge found it, and Gyarados was able to free itself. Lt. Surge then returned it to Silver. Misty also owns a Gyarados in the Electric Tale of Pikachu comic, which she uses in a gym battle against Ash.
