Lapras (ラプラス, Rapurasu, Laplace) is a special Pokémon that looks like a friendly sea creature. It was created by Ken Sugimori for the Pokémon games by Nintendo and Game Freak. Lapras first appeared in the games Pokémon Red and Blue. Since then, it has been in many other games, toys, and cartoons.

The voice of Lapras in the anime is provided by Rikako Aikawa in both Japanese and English.

About Lapras

Lapras was one of the first 151 Pokémon ever designed. These designs were made by Game Freak's team and finished by Ken Sugimori. They were for the very first Pokémon games, Red and Green, which became Red and Blue outside Japan.

What's in a Name?

The name Lapras comes from its Japanese name, Rapurasu. This name is actually the Japanese way of saying Laplace. It might be named after a famous mathematician named Pierre-Simon Laplace.

Lapras's Appearance and Abilities

Lapras is known as the Transport Pokémon. It is a large sea creature that looks a lot like a plesiosaur, which were ancient marine reptiles. It might also be inspired by placodonts, another type of ancient sea animal.

Lapras has four flippers, but its front ones are much bigger. It has a long neck and big black eyes. You might notice its curled ears and a small horn on its forehead. Most of its body is blue, but its belly is a light cream-yellow. Its most special feature is the gray shell on its back. This shell has many blunt bumps on it.

Lapras loves to carry people and other Pokémon across water. Some Lapras can even use Psychic powers, like telepathy. This means they can understand what humans are saying! They also sing high-pitched songs, like whales, to keep track of their friends and family.

Lapras are very gentle and do not like to fight. This gentle nature has made them easy targets for hunters in the past. Because of this, Lapras became very rare in the wild. However, you can still find wild Lapras in some areas, like the Sinnoh region's Victory Road.

Gigantamax Lapras

In the games Pokémon Sword and Shield, Lapras can become a giant Gigantamax form. When it Gigantamaxes, it gains a special move called G-Max Resonance. This is the only Ice-type G-Max Move available.

Lapras in Games and Shows

Lapras has appeared in many Pokémon adventures.

In the Video Games

Lapras first appeared in the very first games, Pokémon Red and Blue. It also showed up in their remakes like Yellow, FireRed, and LeafGreen. In these games, you could even be given a Lapras in Saffron City.

Lapras has been in almost every main Pokémon game since then. In Pokémon Gold and Silver and their remakes, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver, you could find one in Union Cave every Friday. In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, wild Lapras were easier to find, but still in just one area.

Lapras also appears in many other Pokémon games. These include Pokémon Conquest, Pokémon Snap, Pokémon Channel, Pokémon Pinball, Pokémon Trozei!, the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, the Pokémon Ranger series, Pokémon Rumble, PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure, and Pokémon Go.

It even appears in the fighting game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. There, Lapras is a spirit that can help you cross water in the "World of Light" adventure mode.

In Other Media

Lapras is also a star in the Pokémon TV show and comic books.

In the Anime

In the anime, the main character Ash finds a young Lapras. This Lapras was accidentally left behind by its family in the Orange Islands. Ash rescues it from some bad trainers and Team Rocket. After that, Lapras joins Ash's team.

Ash mostly uses Lapras to travel between the different islands. But it also helps him in some battles. Eventually, Lapras finds its family again and leaves Ash. They meet up later in the Johto region. Lapras helps save its entire family from Team Rocket and becomes their leader.

Lapras also appears in a special anime episode called Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Darkness. In this episode, Lapras gives Piplup and Chimchar a ride.

In the Manga

In the Pokémon Adventures comic series, a character named Pryce had two favorite Lapras. He lost them in an avalanche. An egg born by them hatched right after. Pryce was so sad that he wanted to bring his Lapras back. He started looking into time travel. This led to many events in the Johto story, where he tried to catch a Celebi.
