Pokémon Ranger (ポケモンレンジャー, Pokemon Renjā) is an exciting adventure game for the Nintendo DS console. It was made by HAL Laboratory and Creatures Inc.. The Pokémon Company published it, and Nintendo helped share it with players.

The game first came out in Japan on March 23, 2006. It then arrived in North America and Australia later in 2006. European players could get it in April 2007. You could even play it on the Wii U Virtual Console starting in February 2016.

Pokémon Ranger works with other Pokémon games like Diamond, Platinum, and HeartGold and SoulSilver. This means you can send a special legendary Pokémon egg, Manaphy's egg, to those games! This adventure takes place in a unique place called the Fiore region.

Gameplay: Catching Pokémon Differently

Pokémon Ranger is a role-playing game that plays very differently from other Pokémon games. Instead of using Poké Balls, you play as a Pokémon Ranger in the Fiore region. Your main tool is a "capture styler," which you control with your Nintendo DS stylus.

You catch Pokémon temporarily by drawing loops around them with your styler. You need to draw a certain number of loops to capture them. Be careful, though! Pokémon might try to run away or even attack your styler.

Your styler has an energy bar, like a health bar. If it runs out of energy, you'll go back to the last save point. You can recharge your styler at Ranger bases, which are like Pokémon Centers. There are also quick save spots for emergencies.

Once you've caught a Pokémon, you can use its special abilities to help you. For example, a Pokémon might help you cut down obstacles, tackle things, shoot fire, or spray water. They can also make your styler stronger. If you use a Water-type Pokémon, it might create a bubble to stop a wild Pokémon from attacking while you loop it.

Story and Setting

The Fiore Region

The game's story happens in the Fiore region. Its name comes from the Italian word for "flower." This region is special because it doesn't have any Pokémon that originally live there. It also doesn't have any Pokémon Trainers. People in Fiore keep Pokémon as pets, not for battles, and they don't use Poké Balls.

Fiore is a small island region with many mountains. It has four main towns, each named after a season:

  • Ringtown (spring) in the west.
  • Fall City (fall) in the east.
  • Wintown (winter) at the foot of the northern mountains.
  • Summerland (summer) on a southern island.

You can travel between these towns through places like Krokka Tunnel and Panula Cave. The coldest part of Fiore is Panula Cave, where you can find Ice-type Pokémon, including the legendary Regice.

The Sekra Range is a tall mountain range. It's home to the bad guys' base and the Fiore Temple. This ancient temple is where the game's big ending takes place. On the same island as Summerland, there's a big jungle called the Olive Jungle. It has many Bug- and Grass-type Pokémon. In the middle of the jungle is a ruin called the Jungle Relic. Long ago, Rangers would test their skills here by facing powerful Dragon Pokémon like Flygon, Salamence, Charizard, and Kingdra.

After you finish the main story, you can explore Fiore freely. You can also take on special missions through the Ranger Net. These missions let you catch legendary Pokémon like Deoxys, Celebi, and Mew. If you unlock a special code, you can even get the Manaphy Egg to transfer to other Pokémon games.

Main Characters and Villains

You play as either Lunick or Solana, a new Pokémon Ranger. You'll meet other Rangers who are part of the Ranger Union. Each town has a Ranger leader, like Cameron, Elita, Joel, and Spenser. Professor Hastings is also important; he's in charge of technology for the Ranger Union.

The bad guys in this game are called the Go-Rock Squad. Their leaders are the Go-Rock Quads, who are the boss's three sons and daughter. They have a special saying they repeat every time you see them.

The Go-Rock Squad's plan is to use a powerful "Super Styler" to control legendary Pokémon like Entei, Suicune, and Raikou. They want to make these Pokémon cause trouble, then pretend to be heroes by stopping them. After that, they plan to make Pokémon cause more problems and charge people money to fix them.

After the main story, you'll have three extra missions. In these, you'll need to capture other powerful legendary Pokémon: Kyogre, Groudon, and Rayquaza.

Game Development and Promotion

Information about Pokémon Ranger first appeared in a Japanese magazine called CoroCoro Comic in July 2005. A short preview of the game was also shown at the end of the 8th Pokémon movie, Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew.

Pokémon Rangers in Other Media

Pokémon Rangers have also appeared in the Pokémon animated TV series. They go on special missions to help Pokémon and people get along. They have a device similar to the Capture Styler that lets them temporarily control wild Pokémon. This device also helps them check on Pokémon's health. Solana, one of the main characters from the game, even appeared in three episodes of the anime!

You can also battle Pokémon Rangers in other Pokémon games like Ruby and Sapphire and Diamond and Pearl. In these games, they protect the environment and wild Pokémon.

A movie based on the game, Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea, came out in 2007. It featured a new Ranger named Jack Walker, who helps protect a legendary Manaphy Egg.

Cool Merchandise

A special game watch was made that looks just like the Pokémon Rangers' Capture Styler! It's designed to look like the device you use in the game to catch Pokémon.
