The Heroes
Kanto Pokédex Holders
- Red (レッド, Reddo) is a Trainer from Pallet Town. He started his journey with a Bulbasaur from Professor Oak. This Bulbasaur later evolved into a powerful Venusaur. Red is rivals with Professor Oak's grandson, Blue. He also caught a Pikachu that became one of his main Pokémon.
In his first adventure, Red got his Pokédex from Professor Oak. He traveled across the Kanto region to record all the Pokémon. Along the way, he kept running into the evil Team Rocket. Red, Blue, and Green worked together to stop Team Rocket from controlling the legendary birds Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. Red even defeated Team Rocket's leader, Giovanni, and caught the powerful Mewtwo. He became the Pokémon Champion after beating Blue in a big tournament.
Later, Red was captured by the Elite Four, a group of strong, evil trainers. He was rescued and helped defeat them. In another story, he tried to become a Gym Leader but was too injured. He then helped fight the Mask of Ice, a new Team Rocket leader.
Red returned to lead his friends in the FireRed and LeafGreen story. They rescued Professor Oak from Team Rocket and faced the Pokémon Deoxys. After a tough battle, Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, and Silver were all turned to stone. They were finally freed in the Emerald story.
Red's Pokémon include Saur (Venusaur), Poli (Poliwrath), Snor (Snorlax), Aero (Aerodactyl), Gyara (Gyarados), and Pika (Pikachu).
- Blue Oak, known in Japan as Green Ōkido (オーキド・グリーン, Ōkido Gurīn), is Professor Oak's grandson. He started his journey with a Charmander that later evolved into a strong Charizard. Blue began as a bit arrogant, but he grew to be more calm and focused. He's very good at training Pokémon, even those that aren't his own. He is Red's rival, but their rivalry became more friendly over time.
In the first story, Blue and Red became rivals after many encounters. They even accidentally traded all their Pokémon and trained each other's teams! Blue, Red, and Green worked together to defeat Team Rocket and save Professor Oak. Blue lost to Red in the final Pokémon League match, but he saw Red as a true friend.
Blue helped train the new trainer Yellow when she searched for Red. He later became the Gym Leader of Viridian City. He also helped defeat the Mask of Ice and the new Team Rocket. In the FireRed and LeafGreen story, Blue helped Red stop Team Rocket again but was turned to stone. He was freed in the Emerald story.
Blue also appeared in the X and Y story, where his Charizard could Mega Evolve.
- Green, known in Japan as Blue (ブルー, Burū), is a clever trainer who once stole a Squirtle from Professor Oak. She didn't have a Pokédex or her own Pokémon because she was kidnapped by the legendary Pokémon Ho-Oh when she was young. She first tried to trick Red, but later teamed up with Red and Blue to defeat Sabrina from Team Rocket.
Green qualified for the Pokémon League Tournament. She lost to Professor Oak because she had a fear of bird Pokémon, which he used. Professor Oak felt bad for her and gave her the third Pokédex, forgiving her for stealing Squirtle.
In the Yellow story, Green sent Yellow on a mission to find Red. It was revealed that her fear of bird Pokémon came from being kidnapped by a mysterious bird Pokémon (Ho-Oh) when she was five. This made her hold a grudge against the Elite Four.
Green later appeared in the Gold, Silver & Crystal story. It was revealed that she and Silver were both kidnapped by the Mask of Ice as children. They escaped and became very close, like siblings. She helped defeat the Mask of Ice and overcame her fear of birds to protect Silver.
In the FireRed and LeafGreen story, Green went to the Sevii Islands to meet her parents. They were captured by the Psychic Pokémon Deoxys, which shocked Green. She later helped Red and Blue defeat Team Rocket and Deoxys, but she was turned to stone. She was freed in the Emerald story and helped defeat a fake Kyogre.
Green's Pokémon include Blasty (Blastoise), Jiggly (Wigglytuff), a Snubbull, Clefty (Clefable), and Ditty (Ditto).
- Yellow (イエロー, Ierō), also known as "Amarillo del Bosque Verde," is a Trainer from Viridian Forest. She has special powers: she can heal Pokémon and hear their thoughts. Yellow is a cheerful girl who doesn't like battling because she doesn't want to hurt Pokémon. She also seems to have a crush on Red.
Yellow first appeared when Red saved her from a wild Dratini. He helped her catch her first Pokémon, a Rattata. Later, Yellow found Red badly hurt after his battle with Giovanni and helped him.
Two years later, Yellow went to Professor Oak's lab, disguised as a boy. Green sent her on a mission to rescue Red from the Kanto Elite Four. Yellow's special powers were important because they could counter the powers of Lance, the Elite Four leader. Yellow fought the Elite Four, protecting Red's Pikachu, Pika. She teamed up with Gym Leaders, Bill, Blue, Green, and even former Team Rocket members. With Giovanni's help, Yellow defeated Lance. Her true gender was revealed at the end of Volume 6.
In the Gold, Silver & Crystal story, Yellow traveled to Johto and met Crystal. She was the one who woke up the legendary beasts Suicune, Raikou, and Entei. Yellow later found Red, Blue, Green, Silver, and Crystal battling the Mask of Ice. To save Gold, who was trapped in time, Yellow had to take off her hat, revealing her true gender to Red.
During the FireRed and LeafGreen story, Yellow helped Silver find his family. She learned that Silver was Giovanni's son. Yellow helped defeat Team Rocket again but was turned to stone. She was freed in the Emerald story and helped defeat a giant Kyogre.
Yellow's Pokémon include Ratty (Raticate), Dody (Dodrio), Gravvy (Golem), Omny (Omastar), Kitty (Butterfree), and Chuchu (Pikachu). Her Pikachu, Chuchu, and Red's Pikachu, Pika, even had an egg together!
Johto Pokédex Holders
- Gold (ゴールド, Gōrudo) is an energetic and sometimes silly boy who lives in New Bark Town. He started his journey with a Cyndaquil. Gold loves playing billiards (sometimes cheating with his Pokémon!) and listening to the radio. He's known as the "Breeder" because he's amazing at hatching Pokémon and helping baby Pokémon reach their full potential.
Gold is kind-hearted but can be hot-headed. He often misunderstood people when he first met them. Along with his rival, Silver, and Crystal, Gold fought against the Mask of Ice. He even sacrificed himself to stop the Mask of Ice and was saved by Celebi.
After Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, and Silver were turned to stone, Gold and Crystal tried to revive them. Once his friends were freed, Gold joined all the other Pokédex holders to fight Guile Hideout.
In the HeartGold and SoulSilver story, Gold returned as a main character and helped calm down the powerful Pokémon Arceus.
- Silver (シルバー, Shirubā) is a boy who was kidnapped by the Mask of Ice when he was a child. He grew up with Green, and they are very close, like siblings. After they escaped, Silver stole a Totodile from Professor Elm under orders from Lance. He later reunited with Green and helped defeat the Mask of Ice and his group, Neo Team Rocket.
Silver reappeared in the FireRed and LeafGreen story, looking for his family. He learned from a Team Rocket member that he was Giovanni's son. Silver didn't believe it at first, but when Giovanni risked his life to save him, Silver accepted him as his father. He was turned to stone by Team Rocket but was freed in the Emerald story.
Silver returned as a main character in the HeartGold and SoulSilver story.
- Crystal (クリスタル, Kurisutaru), also known as Crys, is a Pokémon capturing expert hired by Professor Oak. When she was a child, she broke both her arms. Because of this, she learned to catch Pokémon by kicking Poké Balls, a skill she still uses.
Her first Pokémon was a Chikorita that escaped from Professor Elm's lab. Her other Pokémon include Chumee (a Smoochum), Monlee (a Hitmonchan), Parasee (a Parasect), Archy (an Arcanine), Natee (a Natu), and Bonee (a Cubone). The legendary Pokémon Suicune chose her to help defeat the Mask of Ice.
Crys sent Emerald to the Battle Frontier to find and catch Jirachi. This was a way to free Silver, Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow from being turned to stone.
Crys is usually gentle but very serious when it comes to her work. She's very enthusiastic about catching Pokémon. She works as Professor Oak's assistant and has caught at least one of every non-legendary Pokémon in the world!
Crys's design is based on the female character from the Pokémon Crystal game. In the HeartGold and SoulSilver story, she wears clothes similar to Lyra from the games.
Hoenn Pokédex Holders
- Ruby (ルビー, Rubī) is a Trainer from the Johto region who moved to Hoenn to live near his father, Norman, the Gym Leader of Petalburg City. Even though his dad is a Gym Leader, Ruby doesn't like battling much. He prefers Pokémon Contests, which are about showing off a Pokémon's beauty and skills.
Ruby first seems a bit proud, but he has a good heart. He ran away from home on his eleventh birthday because he thought his father wouldn't support his dream of being a Pokémon Coordinator.
After running away, he met Sapphire, the daughter of Professor Birch. Sapphire challenged Ruby to a bet: in eighty days, they would both travel around Hoenn. Ruby would try to win every Contest, and Sapphire would try to win all eight Hoenn Gym Badges.
His first three Pokémon were Nana (a Poochyena), Kiki (a Skitty), and Rara (a Ralts). He also has Feefee (a Feebas), Fofo (a Castform), and Mumu (a Mudkip). He even owns a Celebi he found in Johto.
Ruby is a skilled Pokémon Trainer, even if he dislikes battling. When he was six, he loved battling. But he got hurt protecting a girl from a Salamence, and the girl cried. Ruby thought she was scared because he fought too fiercely. From then on, he tried not to battle, focusing on Pokémon's beauty instead.
It was later revealed that Ruby liked Sapphire, and she was the girl he rescued years ago. Neither of them recognized each other at first. Ruby realized who she was when she talked about the event and showed her a scar on his forehead from the Salamence attack.
Ruby is based on Brendan from the Pokémon video games.
- Sapphire Birch, known in Japan as Sapphire Odamaki (オダマキ・サファイア, Odamaki Safaia), is a main character in the Ruby & Sapphire story. She is the daughter of Professor Birch. Sapphire is a wild tomboy who often wears clothes made of leaves.
She met Ruby, who was running away from home. While saving Ruby from two Mightyena, Sapphire got hurt. Ruby, grateful, made her an outfit. She wears the clothes he made because he told her they would fit perfectly.
Sapphire is wild but a very dedicated Pokémon Trainer. She will do anything to reach her goals and protect what she cares about. She was upset when Ruby said he'd rather go back to Johto than help the Gym Leaders fight Team Aqua and Team Magma. She fought Winona, a Gym Leader, who was so impressed by Sapphire's fighting spirit that she gave her a badge.
It was hinted many times that Sapphire liked Ruby, and it was finally revealed that she had a crush on him.
Sapphire's wild personality comes from an incident when she and Ruby met briefly at age five. They were attacked by a wild Salamence. Ruby protected Sapphire, which made her decide to be stronger and focus on Pokémon Battles. She didn't recognize Ruby at first, only realizing who he was when she saw the scar on his forehead from that attack.
Sapphire is based on May from the video games.
- Emerald (エメラルド, Emerarudo) is a challenger in the Battle Frontier. He's an excellent battler and has defeated many powerful Frontier Brains. Crystal hired him to catch the legendary Jirachi because he's so good at catching Pokémon.
Emerald can be arrogant and impatient. He claims not to like Pokémon much, believing that strategy, not faith, wins battles. However, this changes when he gets Sceptile, Sudowoodo, and Dusclops from the Battle Frontier. He starts to see them as friends, not just tools. He looks shorter than he is because he wears high platform shoes under his long clothes. These shoes and his mechanical hands hide his capturing equipment, like different kinds of Poké Balls. He also has a rare ability to calm Pokémon by making them remember their birthplace using special soil.
Emerald is good friends with the legendary Pokémon Latios and Latias, who call him "Rald."
In the Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire story, Emerald returned as a main character.

Because of a mix-up, Pearl thought they were on a reality TV show, escorting Platinum Berlitz to Mt. Coronet for a prize. This wasn't true, but Diamond kept quiet so their journey could continue. She owns a Piplup that evolved into an Empoleon, and a Ponyta that evolved into a Rapidash. Platinum is very competitive. She has entered contests and battled Gym Leaders. She also caught a Lopunny. During a big battle, she received a Cherrim, a Froslass, and a Pachirisu from other trainers.
