Snorlax is a famous Pokémon character from the Pokémon games and shows. In Japan, its name is Kabigon. It was created by Ken Sugimori and first appeared in the Pokémon Red and Blue video games for the Game Boy. Since then, Snorlax has appeared in many games, toys, and animated shows.

Snorlax is a very large Pokémon. It is mostly bluish-green with a cream-colored face, hands, and feet. It has small, closed eyes and a mouth with two teeth sticking out. Snorlax is known as the "Sleeping Pokémon" because it sleeps most of the time. It can weigh over 1,000 pounds! For a long time, Snorlax was the heaviest known Pokémon.

In the Japanese Pokémon anime and Super Smash Bros. games, Katsuyuki Konishi voices Snorlax. Other voice actors have also played Snorlax in different shows and games.

What is Snorlax Like?

Snorlax was one of the first Pokémon designed for the original Pokémon Red and Green games in Japan. When the games came to other countries, Nintendo wanted to give Pokémon names that made sense to new players. The Japanese name "Kabigon" was changed to "Snorlax" for English-speaking players. This new name combines "snore" and "relax," which perfectly describes Snorlax!

Snorlax's Size and Appearance

Snorlax is Pokémon #143 in the Pokédex. It weighs about 1,014 pounds (460 kg) and stands about 6 feet 11 inches (2.1 meters) tall.

Snorlax looks a bit like a big bear without a nose. Its face, hands, and feet are cream-colored, while the rest of its body is teal. It has a large head and two small teeth that stick out from its lower jaw. Snorlax's feet are big, which helps it balance when it stands up. Even though its arms are short, they are long enough for it to grab and eat food.

Snorlax's Eating Habits and Powers

Snorlax has a huge appetite and will eat almost anything! It can even eat old or rotten food. This is because Snorlax has very strong digestive juices in its stomach. These juices can dissolve any kind of poison, so Snorlax doesn't get sick from bad food.

Despite its large size, Snorlax is usually very gentle. Children sometimes even play on its big belly! However, Snorlax has a hidden power. When it holds a special item called Snorlium Z, it can use a super strong move called Pulverizing Pancake.

Snorlax also has a younger form called Munchlax. Munchlax is also very hungry! A Munchlax can evolve into a Snorlax when it becomes good friends with its Trainer. You can get a Munchlax by breeding a Snorlax that is holding a Full Incense item.

Where Does Snorlax Appear?

Snorlax has appeared in many Pokémon video games, animated shows, and movies.

Snorlax in Video Games

Snorlax often plays an important role in the Pokémon games. In games like Pokémon Red, Blue, and their remakes, Snorlax blocks roads. Players need to find a special item called the Poké Flute to wake it up and move past it. This happens on Routes 12 and 16.

Snorlax also blocks paths in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and their remakes. In these games, you need to fix a radio tower and then play the Poké Flute channel on the radio to wake Snorlax. Even though you can only catch one Snorlax in these games, the main character from Red and Blue, Red, uses a Snorlax as his final challenge.

In Pokémon X and Y, Snorlax blocks a bridge near Camphrier Town. A local person says Snorlax does this every year! You need to get the Poké Flute again and give it to the owner of Shabboneau Castle to wake Snorlax.

Later games gave Snorlax new abilities:

  • In Pokémon Sun and Moon, Snorlax can use its unique Z-Move, Pulverizing Pancake, if it holds Snorlium Z and knows the move Giga Impact.
  • In Pokémon Sword and Shield, Snorlax can become a giant Gigantamax form. This form has a special G-Max move called G-Max Replenish.

Snorlax also appears in other Pokémon games:

  • In Pokémon Snap, if you play the Poké Flute, Snorlax will stand up and dance. Taking a picture of this gets you a lot of points!
  • In Pokémon Ranger, Snorlax is often seen sleeping and blocking areas until you complete certain tasks.
  • Snorlax is a friendly character in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure and PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond.
  • Snorlax appears in every Super Smash Bros. fighting game. It jumps out of a Poké Ball and uses its Body Slam move to hit other characters. In Melee, Snorlax is even a stage that players can fight on!

Snorlax in Other Media

Snorlax has been in many episodes of the Pokémon anime.

  • Its first appearance was in episode 41, "Wake Up Snorlax!", where it blocked Ash's path.
  • Ash Ketchum, the main character, catches a Snorlax in "Snack Attack!". This Snorlax was eating all the grapefruits on the Grapefruit Islands. Ash often used this Snorlax in battles, even though it loved to sleep.
  • Ash's Snorlax helped him win important battles, like against Clair's Kingdra and during the Johto League competition. It defeated Gary Oak's Nidoqueen and Arcanine, and Harrison's Steelix and Hypno.
  • Ash's Snorlax also became friends with May's younger Munchlax.
  • Most recently, Snorlax helped Ash earn the Guts Symbol by defeating Greta's Hariyama and Medicham.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga (comic books), a character named Red catches a Snorlax he calls "Lax." Lax was blocking a road during a bicycle race. Lax loves to eat and gets very excited by the smell of honey. After a lot of training, Lax becomes one of the strongest Pokémon on Red's team.

A Snorlax is also seen sleeping on a road in Ryme City in the movie Pokémon Detective Pikachu.
