Psyduck, known as Koduck (コダック, Kodakku) in Japan, is a type of Pokémon from the popular Pokémon world. This world was created by Nintendo and Game Freak. Psyduck was designed by Ken Sugimori. It first appeared in the video games Pokémon Red and Blue. Since then, Psyduck has shown up in many other games and products. You can also see Psyduck in cartoons and comic books based on the Pokémon series.
Psyduck is known as the "duck Pokémon." It often looks confused because it has a constant headache. Usually, it just stands still, trying to make its headache go away. In the Pokémon TV show, Psyduck often appears by accident. Misty, one of the main characters, would try to send out another Pokémon, but Psyduck would pop out instead! Misty's Psyduck has not changed into its next form in the TV show.
Psyduck can change into a stronger Pokémon called Golduck. This happens when Psyduck reaches level 33 in the games.

What Does Psyduck Look Like?
Psyduck was one of the first 151 Pokémon ever created. It was designed by Ken Sugimori for the very first Pokémon games. These games were called Red and Green in Japan. When the games came to other countries, they were named Pokémon Red and Blue.
Originally, Psyduck was called "Koduck" in Japan. But when the games were translated, Nintendo wanted to give Pokémon names that made sense. They wanted names that described what the Pokémon looked like or what it could do. This helped kids in other countries understand the characters better. So, "Koduck" became "Psyduck." This name combines "psychic" (meaning mind powers) and "duck."
Psyduck's Unique Features
Psyduck looks like a yellow platypus with a blank stare. It has a small bunch of black hair on top of its head. Psyduck walks on two legs, and it has arms instead of wings. Its arms are very helpful for using its strong mind powers. Psyduck's simple look is meant to trick enemies into thinking it is weak. It has three claws on each arm. These claws can deliver scratches if Psyduck feels threatened.
Psyduck usually lives in fresh water. You can find them in lakes, small ponds, or rivers. They prefer warmer, tropical places. When a Psyduck wins enough battles and gains experience, it can evolve into Golduck.
Psyduck's Powers and Headaches
Psyduck is always bothered by its headache. It often just stands there, trying to calm the pain. But when the headache gets really bad, Psyduck's brain cells wake up. This allows it to use very strong psychic powers. Some Psyduck use their blank look to their advantage. They make enemies think they are not a threat. Then, they use their psychokinetic powers to attack.
After using its powers, Psyduck often doesn't remember what happened. It might tilt its head in confusion. Sometimes, Psyduck uses its powers while in a deep sleep. It also doesn't remember these moments later.
Where Can You Find Psyduck?
Psyduck in Video Games
You can find Psyduck in many different areas across the Pokémon world. These include regions like Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Central Kalos, and Alola.
In the games Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, a group of Psyduck blocks a path. This path is on Route 210. After you get certain badges, a character named Cynthia gives you a special medicine. This medicine helps cure the Psyduck's headaches.
Psyduck can also be a main character in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team and Red Rescue Team. It appears in the game Super Smash Bros. Melee on the Poké Floats stage. You can fight on its head and beak! Psyduck also appears as a Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
If you play Pokémon Snap, you can take pictures of Psyduck. It is also one of Misty's Pokémon in Pokémon Puzzle League. Psyduck is a character you can meet in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure and its next game, PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond.
Psyduck in Other Stories
In the Pokémon TV show, Misty has a Psyduck. She caught it by accident in an episode called Hypno's Naptime. This Psyduck often causes problems for Misty. It frequently comes out to battle when Misty wants to use a different Pokémon. Even when Misty wants to use Psyduck, it often messes up. One famous example is in the episode "Snack Attack!"
Even though Misty's Psyduck seems silly, she cares about it a lot. It is usually shown as not very smart. But when its headache gets bad enough, it can use incredibly strong Psychic-type moves. These moves are much more powerful than you would expect! Oddly, even though it's a Water-type Pokémon, Misty's Psyduck cannot swim.
Nine Psyduck appeared in the episode "The Psyduck Stops Here!" There were six adult Psyduck and three baby Psyduck. Three of the adults were blocking a path that Ash and his friends needed to use. The Psyduck couldn't go back to their home, Lake Psyduck, because of three Muk.
Psyduck has also appeared in the Pokémon Adventures comic books. Many trainers own Psyduck in these stories. In one part of the comic, an undead Psyduck appeared in the Pokémon Tower. It had been brought back to life by a Gastly. It looked like a normal Psyduck at first. But then its eyes sank in, and skin fell off, showing its bones! Since it was just a mindless undead Pokémon, Red's Bulbasaur easily defeated it.
Psyduck also appears in the 2019 movie Pokémon Detective Pikachu. In the film, Psyduck is the partner of a reporter named Lucy Stevens. Lucy is played by Kathryn Newton.
