What is Mexianthus?
Mexianthus is a genus, which is like a specific group of very similar plants. It's part of a smaller group within the sunflower family called the "boneset tribe" (scientifically known as Eupatorieae).
How Mexianthus Got Its Name
The name Mexianthus was chosen to honor a famous plant collector named Ynés Mexía. She was a Mexican-American explorer who discovered many new plant species. It's pretty cool that a plant genus is named after her!
The Only Species: Mexianthus mexicanus
Right now, scientists only know about one type of plant in the Mexianthus genus. Its full name is Mexianthus mexicanus. This unique plant grows naturally only in the State of Jalisco, which is in western Mexico.
