Mićo Mićić's Political Journey

Early Life and Education

Mićo Mićić went to school in Bijeljina. He later studied physical education in Sarajevo and finished in 1981. For many years, from 1981 to 1996, he worked as a teacher in high schools in Kalesija and Bijeljina.

Becoming a Politician

From 1996 to 2000, Mićić led a department in Bijeljina that helped war veterans and people with disabilities. After the elections in 2000, Mićić became a minister in the government of Republika Srpska. He was the Minister for Refugees and Displaced Persons. From 2003 to 2005, he was the Minister of Labor and Veterans' and Disabled Protection. He was also a vice-president of the Serb Democratic Party (SDS).

Serving as Mayor of Bijeljina

In October 2004, Mićić was elected as the mayor of Bijeljina. A mayor is the leader of a city or town. He was re-elected three more times, in 2008, 2012, and 2016. This means he was mayor for a long time, 16 years in total.

In 2013, other mayors in Republika Srpska chose Mićić to be the President of their Association of Municipalities and Cities. This group helps different cities and towns work together. From 2017, he was the vice-president of this association. He also served as the first chairman of a group called the Network of Associations of Local Authorities of South-East Europe (NALAS) in 2017-2018.

In March 2020, Mićić left the SDS party. He then started his own party called the Party of Democratic Srpska Semberija (SDSS). He ran for mayor of Bijeljina again in the November 2020 elections. However, he did not win this time. The new mayor became Ljubiša Petrović.

Personal Life and Legacy

Mićo Mićić was married to Radmila Mićić and they had three children.

In November 2020, Mićić became sick with COVID-19. He was taken to the hospital in Banja Luka. Sadly, he passed away on December 23, 2020, at the age of 64.

He received special awards called the Order of Saint Sava I and II. These awards were given to him by the Serbian Orthodox Church.
