The Miami River's Journey
Where the River Begins
The Miami River starts high up in the Adirondack Mountains. This is a beautiful area with lots of trees and wildlife. The very beginning of the river is called its "headwaters." You can find its start around 10 miles (16 kilometers) northwest of a town called Speculator.
How the River Flows
From its start, the Miami River flows southeast for about 3 miles (5 kilometers). As it flows, you can see Pillsbury Mountain to its southwest. Page Mountain is on its northeast side.
Then, the river makes a sharp turn. It flows southwest for about one mile (1.6 kilometers). After that, it turns sharply east for another mile.
Finally, the river flows mostly northeast for about 8 miles (13 kilometers). It keeps going until it reaches a lake.
Joining Other Waters
The Miami River flows into Lewey Lake. This lake is a pretty spot in the Adirondacks.
Lewey Lake then empties its water into Indian Lake. Indian Lake is a much bigger lake.
From Indian Lake, the water flows into the Indian River. This river then carries the water even further.
Finally, the Indian River flows into the mighty Hudson River. This happens about 17 miles (27 kilometers) northeast of Lewey Lake. So, the Miami River's water eventually becomes part of the famous Hudson River!
