Early Life and School
Mica Endsley was born in California. She grew up in different places like Phoenix, Arizona, and Houston, Texas. She went to Spring Woods High School in Houston.
After high school, she went to Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. In 1982, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering. This type of engineering helps make systems and processes work better.
She continued her studies and earned a Master of Science degree from Purdue University in 1985. Then, in 1990, she received her highest degree, a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), from the University of Southern California.
Her Career and Important Work
Working for the Air Force
The job of Chief Scientist was created over 60 years ago. The person in this role gives scientific advice to the leaders of the United States Air Force. This includes the Secretary of the Air Force and the Chief of Staff.
As Chief Scientist, Mica Endsley worked with top scientists and engineers. She made sure that the Air Force's research was useful and effective. She also helped solve any science or technology problems that came up.
Mica Endsley was the first person who specialized in "human factors engineering" to be Chief Scientist. She was also the first woman to hold this important position. Human factors engineering looks at how people interact with machines and systems.
Leading SA Technologies
From 1997 to 2013, Dr. Endsley was the president and CEO of a company called SA Technologies. This company helped design systems that are easy for people to use. They worked on systems for airplanes, air traffic control, hospitals, and even oil and gas operations.
Before starting her own company, she was a professor. She taught at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and Texas Tech University.

She was also the founder and first editor of the Journal of Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making. This is a science journal where experts share their research. In 2003, she received the Jack Kraft Innovator Award for her amazing work on situation awareness.
